We shared our Trauma-sensitive Mindfulness Training with a group of incredible educators and admin last weekend. Thank you to all who joined us, in person and online!
As a way of befriending our nervous system, we named our states. One participant called her flight/flight ‘Forrest Gump’, hence my expression in the photo (not sure why I shied away from drama in high school😋).
For the sake of mindful living, let’s look at the four states we tend to employ when faced with stress:

Fight, which expresses itself through blame, hostility or combative communication.

Flight, which expresses itself as running away, hiding, seeking safety elsewhere.

Freeze, which happens when we withdraw, get lost in our screens, blank out or numb out.

Fawn, which happens when we attempt to please or appease others to control a situation.

What are your top two instinctive ways of dealing with stress? What would you name them?

Once we have awareness of our stress reactions, we can learn to work with them so we respond in more skillful, less harmful ways. We’ve had some pretty amazing conversations arise from this content, and it’s a great discussion to have with your students to better understand how your nervous system works…just in time for Monday’s events.

We’re home from our final yoga retreat in Moncton with these adorable women, (and baby Lincoln). During the final presentations, Lucy, a guidance counsellor, spoke about how crucial it is to build girl’s self-esteem, and how we need to teach them to fix each other’s crowns, instead of trying to knock them off. I see it all the time, girls and women knocking each other down, in an attempt to quiet the self-hatred and shame inside of themselves.

But that’s not what we experienced together this week, in fact, it was quite the opposite. These women spent the week supporting each other through practice teaching, as they searched for the words in their minds and stumbled through asanas on their mats. It was a stellar thing to witness, as the American presidential campaign reflected the same kind of lifting up of women, by women.

I feel so gratified in knowing that these graduates are returning to their communities with hearts full of fun and friendship, and I look so forward to seeing how they share these teachings.

Oh and a special congrats goes out to baby Lincoln for receiving his yoga teaching certificate just 4 weeks after receiving his birth certificate!

This summer, we have been very blessed to have Holly Meuse attend our YTT.
She’s just completed her masters, is currently working through her PhD in Education, and is taking our ytt for fun at the same time. She started us off with a sacred smudge and offered First Nations wisdom with a cleansing ritual of dumping our negativity into a stone that we were all given and then invited us to throw it into the lake. It was such a simple, yet powerful practice that helped to relieve the burdens we carry.
Holly, we are immensely thankful for your presence and contribution to this experience.
Wela’lin!
