Starting over in a new country can come with a strong desire to get ahead, and get there faster.

You want to build a better life. So you want to increase your income and make your money to work harder.

That makes an “amazing opportunity” more appealing.

But before you put your money into anything, slow down and ask questions.

What am I actually investing in?
Where does the return come from?
Who oversees the investment or the person selling it?
When can I withdraw? What are the conditions, fees and restrictions?

And if all the answer you are getting is how amazing the opportunity is, or how much someone else has made from it. Pause!

Sometimes if it is too good to be true, it actually is.

Ajo, or Esusu, has long been a traditional way of saving and accessing credit.

Traders in the same market or community used it as their own savings and credit system. Employees in corporate organizations also pooled funds for things like home construction, weddings, or buying a vehicle.

But Ajo has never been without risk.

There has always been the possibility of someone taking their turn and failing to continue their contributions. Some groups used post-dated cheques as a safeguard while others relied primarily on trust.

Today, some banks and fintechs offer variations of the model, adding mechanisms to reduce some of those risks at additional cost.

So, is Ajo still relevant?

I think it is relevant and useful when the purpose, structure, people involved and level of risk all make sense.

Are you still doing ajo in 2026? Why?

Budgeting is supposed to help you manage your money better. so you start doing it and yet no results.

The problem is usually how we approach budgeting.

Most people start budgeting by looking for expenses to cut so they can save more.

But that’s not the right sequence.

In my two decades in financial services, I saw how organizations approached budgeting. They didn’t start with:

“Where can we cut?”

They started with a vision and strategy. Their budgets were built to support those goals.

A budget is a tool. Without a clear purpose, it can become a frustrating, fruitless exercise.

The same principle applies to your personal finances.

Swipe through to see how to build a budget around your goals, not just your expenses.
