IWK Tours & Nursing Information Sessions

The Pamoja Nursing School Primer begins today, and we are excited to welcome Black nursing students from across Nova Scotia for an exceptional three-day experience exploring nursing education and the nursing profession.

We are deeply grateful to the IWK Health Centre for supporting Primer participants through tours of select inpatient units and information sessions with nurses, nurse administrators, and nurse educators. These hands-on experiences help students understand what to expect in nursing education and practice, while creating opportunities for mentorship, knowledge sharing, and connections that will help guide and support the success of future Black nurses.

The Pamoja Nursing School Primer runs from Monday, August 17 to Wednesday, August 19, 2026.

Community Engagement Session | August 19, 2026

The Pamoja Nursing School Primer begins Monday, and we are thrilled to welcome Black nursing students from across Nova Scotia to this rewarding three-day experience exploring nursing education and the nursing profession.

Pamoja means “together” in Swahili, and the Nursing School Primer is a critical element of MBRACe’s Pamoja Nursing Program, established to enhance recruitment, increase retention, and support the academic and professional success of Black nursing students in Nova Scotia.

This year, we’re delighted to welcome the following local organizations to our Community Engagement Session, giving students an opportunity to connect with their community and become more involved:

New Funding Alert: SSHRC Insight Grant

MBRACe is proud to announce that we have been awarded a SSHRC Insight Grant to support our novel research project:

"Understanding the Educational Experiences of Black Nursing Students in Nova Scotia: A Qualitative Longitudinal Study."

Funding Amount: $479,377
Project Duration: 5 years

Project Objectives:
✨ Examine the academic, clinical, and lived experiences of Black nursing students in Nova Scotia.
✨ Identify the factors that influence belonging, retention, and program completion among Black nursing students in Nova Scotia.

Dr. Keisha Jefferies, MBRACe Director, Assistant Professor, and University Research Chair at Dalhousie University, shared:
"We are delighted to receive this funding to further advance our critical research that is designed to improve health outcomes among Black populations as well as support the next generation of critical health leaders."

About the SSHRC Insight Grant
SSHRC Insight Grants support long-term research initiatives that advance knowledge and deepen our understanding of individuals, societies, and complex social issues. These grants enable scholars to pursue impactful research that has been rigorously evaluated and recognized by peers and experts.

📅 Save the Date: 2026 Pamoja Nursing School Primer

We are excited to announce that the 2026 Pamoja Nursing School Primer will take place at Dalhousie University from Monday, August 17 to Wednesday, August 19, 2026.

Over three inspiring days, Black nursing students from any nursing school in Nova Scotia will come together for an engaging program of interactive learning, mentorship, and community building designed to support their nursing education journey.

Participants will enjoy:
• An inspiring keynote and guest speakers
• A guided tour of the Dalhousie Nursing Skills Lab and clinical units at IWK Health
• A session celebrating Black nurse trailblazers and the significant contributions of Black nurses to the profession
• A student panel discussion
• Opportunities to connect with local community organizations

Breakfast and lunch will be provided each day.

🎉 Congratulations, Raytesha! 🎉

Congratulations to graduate practical nurse and NSCC Pictou Campus Class of 2026 Valedictorian, Raytesha!

Raytesha has been involved with the Pamoja Nursing Program since its founding in 2024. She credits the initiative with laying a strong foundation for her education by offering essential academic mentorship, fostering authentic community, and building a supportive network of peers of African descent from across Nova Scotia.

Raytesha is now taking the next step in her nursing career as a Perioperative Nurse at Aberdeen Hospital in New Glasgow.

We are incredibly proud of all you have accomplished, Raytesha, and wish you every success as you begin this exciting new chapter!

MBRACe's Pamoja Nursing School Primer—a three-day orientation program that introduces Black nursing students from any nursing school in Nova Scotia to nursing education and the nursing profession—returns in August 2026.

❤️ Celebrating Women and Girls of African Descent

Today MBRACe is celebrating the United Nations International Day for Women and Girls of African Descent.

According to the United Nations, women and girls of African descent continue to face multiple and overlapping forms of discrimination, manifesting in higher rates of poverty, barriers to education, limited access to quality healthcare, and underrepresentation in decision-making.

The UN General Assembly has called for renewed global action and accountability to eliminate racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia, and related intolerance, particularly as they affect women and girls of African descent.

At MBRACe, we examine health and social issues that impact Black populations as part of our efforts to advance Black health through research and advocacy. Currently we have the following work underway related to the health and well-being of women and girls of African descent:

🎉 Welcome, Paula – MBRACe 2026 Summer Research Student! 👏

We're excited to welcome Paula to the MBRACe team this summer!

Paula is a fifth-year Psychology student at the Federal University of Paraná, Brazil. Her studies and academic interests focus on the preventing and combating sexual violence against children and adolescents, women's rights and the experiences of the homeless population.

She joins us for the summer thanks to the Mitacs Globalink 2026 - Summer Research Internship Program.

While she is at MBRACe, Paula is collaborating on research related to the mental health of Black women in Nova Scotia.

In her spare time, Paula enjoys singing, playing musical instruments, dance, Capoeira, Muay Thai, Yoga, visual arts, and more.

We're excited to welcome Precious to the MBRACe team this summer!

Precious is currently completing a Master of Health Administration at Dalhousie University. She also holds a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, graduating Cum Laude, and is a SHRM-CP-certified professional with interests in health equity, workforce systems, research operations, and people-centred healthcare improvement.

Through her MHA residency with MBRACe, Precious supports research coordination, evidence synthesis, knowledge translation, workflow development, and onboarding continuity across health equity research projects.

Outside of her academic and professional work, Precious enjoys writing, mentoring, exploring leadership ideas, and spending time with her family.
