Congratulations to the graduates of 2026! There are a few more of you than a century ago, when the 1926 graduates gathered for their convocation photograph on the steps of Shirreff Hall ...

Just in time for Spring lambing, the MacRae Library has started to publish some of the 1200+ items scanned this past winter by their Young Canada Works intern, Steve Brakel. Shear genius! These records are part of the Edith Zillig sheep and wool collection, which can be viewed here. https://findingaids.library.dal.ca/edith-zillig-sheep-and-wool-collection

Warm congratulations to Dr. Baylis. We are proud to hold her papers in the University Archives.

When Dr. Francoise Baylis takes the stage at The Royal Society of Canada’s Annual Gala in Montréal next week, it will mark the start of a new chapter in her remarkable career as the RSC’s next president (2025–2028).

A world-renowned bioethicist, Dr. Baylis has helped shape global conversations on the responsible use of biotechnology and the ethics of human genome editing. Now, she will lead Canada’s national academy of distinguished scholars, artists, and scientists at a time when trusted voices are needed to connect research, policy, and public understanding.

We are very saddened to learn about the recent death of Mary Helen Vingoe. Her contributions to theatre in the Maritimes and Canada are enormous. And we are proud to remember her as a Dalhousie graduate and winner of the 1976 University Medal in Theatre.

We hope that everyone has a fantastic time at Halifax Pride Parade tomorrow! Check out these photos from the 1997 parade, which are just a few of the images digitized in the Ross Boutilier fonds, donated through the Nova Scotia LGBT Seniors Archive project.

Convocation ca. 1925. Different dreams, different haircuts. Same sense of accomplishment and pride. Congratulations to the Class of 2025!

2b theatre company is turning 25! (Plenty old enough to be archived, as you can see from their 10-year anniversary poster as well as by exploring their collection). Their forthcoming birthday concert looks like it will be another one for the records!

Poet Bliss Carman was born on this day in 1861, in Fredericton, New Brunswick. Although he spent much of his life in the United States, during the 1920s Carman was a member of the Halifax literary and social set, The Song Fishermen. As we head into the Easter weekend, here's one of several of his poems in manuscript form found in the William Inglis Morse Collection. You may also wish to peruse our digitized copies of The Song Fishermen's Song Sheets, a periodical issued "every so often."

Wonderful to see that the Ellen Ballon collection is being highlighted by the Répertoire International des Sources Musicales (RISM). Here they share a Villa-Lobos score to celebrate the anniversary of his birth in 1887.

There's lots more to see our online catalogue! https://findingaids.library.dal.ca/ellen-ballon-fonds

Feliz Aniversário! Der brasilianische Komponist Heitor Villa-Lobos wurde am 5. März 1887 in Rio de Janeiro geboren.
RISM kennt bisher nur wenige Musikquellen von ihm, kann aber auf zwei Autographe verweisen.
