On Monday, September 21, the Right Honourable Richard Wagner, Chief Justice of Canada, confirmed that the Supreme Court of Canada will visit Halifax from September 20-24, 2027, to hear appeals and meet with members of the public.

This visit to the East Coast will continue the Court’s tradition of sitting outside Ottawa to bring Canada's highest court closer to the people it serves. The Court previously visited Winnipeg in 2019 and Quebec City in 2022.

Schulich School of Law Dean Sarah Harding (LLB ’89) serves on the organizing committee and shares that this visit to Halifax will be an historic and unprecedented opportunity for the local legal community and for the law school as well.

“I’m thrilled that our students and faculty will have the immense privilege of spending half a day with the justices,” she says. “I can’t imagine a more inspiring and memorable experience to ground one’s legal career.”

As it did while in Winnipeg and Quebec City, the Court will participate in a variety of activities with members of the public, students and the legal community. Further details regarding the appeals to be heard and the Court's program of activities will be announced closer to the visit.

The Schulich School of Law invites members of the Dalhousie and legal communities to a panel discussion titled "Scaling Down Democracy – Broadening Critical Thinking in Times of Decline" as part of the Law Commission of Canada's Rule of Law Lecture Series, taking place on Tuesday, September 29, from 5-7pm at the Weldon Law Building .

About the topic:
The idea of scaling down democracy aims to acknowledge its fragility while broadening the scope of critical thinking about its erosion. Democracy is at its lowest point in decades, with more than 70% of the world's population living under autocratic rule. Authoritarian resurgence, populism, and the erosion of trust are strongly related to structural factors like inequality, social fragmentation, disinformation, and weakened rule of law. Rather than treating this decline as a terminal crisis, the concept of scaling down democracy invites us to focus on smaller scales of restoration – community practices, local resilience, and everyday forms of resistance – as sites where democratic values can be nurtured.

At the Schulich School of Law, reconciliation is a shared responsibility that requires ongoing learning, reflection, and action.

On September 25, several faculty members joined students in Aboriginal and Indigenous Law in Context, a mandatory first-year law course, to talk about the ways in which reconciliation shapes their teaching, research, and service.

🍂 As we celebrate the first full day of fall, we're reflecting on how the law school's Little Herb & Veggie Garden is more than just a place where things grow. It's a living reflection of the Weldon Tradition of unselfish public service.

This year, a Schulich Law staff member grew scarlet runner beans at home from seeds originally shared through the garden and today, seeds harvested from those plants were returned to Weldon to be shared once again.

🌱 One tradition. One plant. Three generations... and counting.

Just as Weldonites pay forward knowledge, mentorship, and service, these scarlet runner beans tell a story of kindness and community. What began as just an idea has flourished beyond a single growing season, creating new opportunities for future generations to learn and give back.

🌿 A simple act of sharing seeds. A powerful example of the Weldon Tradition in action.
