Let kids play! This McDonalds in Alaska probably thought they were giving kids what they wanted (screens!) and giving parents what they wanted (a break!) and giving everyone what they wanted (safety!) They invested resources. They got the latest and what they probably thought was the best.
Only what we know, especially since so much of childhood moved onto screens, is that kids need physical play. They need movement, they need 3D space, they need full-sensory activities. They need touch, seeing at different focal lengths, they need to scan faces and body language, they need to take turns and share resources, and they need to push their own risk boundaries.
Much more on this in .
So, it may be modern, it may be advanced, but kids don’t need the latest gadgets. They need physical play, with other kids. Thank you, McDonalds, for providing these opportunities for kids for decades (slides 2 and 3). I hope every franchise that has switched to screens will return to the old PlayPlaces!

What IS forest school? Come find out!
Join us at Sandy Lake this Saturday, July 4th for a family-friendly hike through one of the last pockets of trees over 100 years old in Nova Scotia - did you know the province has less than 1% of these forests left?
We'll learn to identify Wabanaki tree species by their leaves, play Tree Bingo, and wrap up with an open Q&A where you can ask us anything about forest school and raising kids in nature. Stick around for a swim after!
Sandy Lake is a special place - and it needs our voices. Come hike, swim, and learn more about what our community can do to protect this critical green space.
📅 July 4 | 9:30 am – 12:30 pm | Sandy Lake
👨👩👧 All ages welcome | Easy to moderate terrain
👉 Please register to RSVP — spots are limited: ecologyaction.ca/get-involved/events/hike-greenbelt
