September 30th is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, a day to recognize and reflect on the intergenerational harm that residential schools have caused to Indigenous families and communities, to honour those who have been affected by this injustice, and to ensure public commemoration of this history as a vital part of the reconciliation process.
The university will be closed on September 30th.

October 1 is Treaty Day, a day to remember, respect and honour the Treaties of Peace and Friendship.

Tomorrow (September 24) students are invited to take part in a smudging ceremony and a national webinar screening, Honouring Indigenous Leadership.

On September 29, Santamarians are invited to wear orange shirts (available at the bookstore with proceeds going to Mi'kmawey Debert Indian Residential School Legacy Project).

Can economic uncertainty affect such unexpected aspects of life as health, voting, fertility, marriage, homeownership and savings?

A public economics lecture will be held on September 28, 1-2:30 PM in the Unilever Lounge, 4th floor Sobey Building, Saint Mary's University.

Titled "The Consequences of Economic Insecurity" the talk will feature Andrew E. Clark, Paris School of Economics – CNRS, and Conchita D'Ambrosio, University of Luxembourg. These visiting professors will share the data they have collected.

Saint Mary’s Careers and Experiential Learning hosted a volunteer fair today on campus. Some of the opportunities included supporting those with loss of sight, working on environmental campaigns, supporting political parties and contributing to art projects. CRA had a booth as did Canadian Correctional Services. 

If you have time and ability to support a community organization, it can be a great way to put down roots, make connections and feed your purpose.

Retail is changing and the opportunities for the next generation of retail leaders are expanding with it.

This October, the David Sobey Retailing Centre is hosting its inaugural RetailNEXT Student Summit at Saint Mary's University Halifax in Halifax. The Summit will bring together students from across Canada with retail executives, entrepreneurs and innovators for two days of networking, hands-on learning and career development.

Students will have the opportunity to hear directly from some of Canada's top retail industry leaders through keynotes, fire side chats and panels, take on real-world challenges through a case competition, workshop and hackathon, and network and build meaningful connections with professionals from across the industry.

With retail evolving through technology, AI, changing consumer expectations and new business models, RetailNEXT is an opportunity for students to discover the many career paths available within this dynamic industry.

On September 10, 2026, 34 Sobey students (BComm, Masters and PhD) travelled to New Glasgow, Nova Scotia, to attend the Sobeys Annual General Meeting (AGM) at a Cineplex.
The students were addressed by Rob Sobey; Pierre St-Laurent, CEO of Empire Company; and James M. Dickson, the Chair of the Board of Directors.
Students had the opportunity to observe the AGM live and gain firsthand exposure to how a major Canadian corporation conducts its annual meeting and engages with shareholders, stakeholders, and networks.
Sobey School always aims to offer students hands-on, immersive experiences like this to enrich their learning. Many thanks to Sobeys & Empire Company Ltd for hosting us!
