Our Set the Tone Holiday recitals are this weekend! I absolutely LOVE to watch my students’ perform for their loved ones. It takes a lot of courage to perform for others. We feel nervous/excitement, including me, before the recitals. I like to remind my students, and myself, that we are well prepared and that helps to increase our feelings of confidence.

This musical student has been with me since Set the Tone Halifax began four years ago. She loves ‘Silent Night’ as much as I do. Each year she learns the next level of the song. This year includes crossing fingers, hands and using the damper pedal. Enjoy!

“T’is the season to be jolly!”
This week, my clients in long term care were happy to sing some holiday favourites. It was lovely to reminisce about Christmas’ past and talk about family traditions.

Teaching this young adult beginner piano lessons has been an absolute pleasure. She has learned so much in our short time together. It helps that she is already a beautiful singer with a strong musical foundation. I am excited for her to perform at our December recital!

This father/son duo (sometimes a trio;) light up Family Music time at Set the Tone! Preparation for the December recital has begun and this four year old musician created his own verse to add to our song, “Santa’s Helpers”!

I introduced the song and picture book, “Coat of Many Colours” by Dolly Parton a few weeks ago. It quickly became one of his favourite music story books. I have used this song in so many different situations throughout my lengthy career and it always resonates with folks. Thank you Dolly for writing this beautiful song and my Mom for introducing me to it when I was little. ❤️

I found out my sweet nephew could no longer participate in the strings program at his school. “What about your music education!”, I exclaimed. Some may find my reaction a tad dramatic.🤣 In my opinion, we found the most delightful solution. See video below.

Can’t wait for him to join the band around the campfire next summer!🎵

Family music at Set the Tone is so much fun with this lovely crew! The youngest is the focus of the class for me as the facilitator. She is given opportunities to make choices and lead the music activities. It is beautiful to see the rest of the family support her, especially her big sister. ❤️🎵

Some of my ukulele students had fun learning “The Addam’s Family theme song for Halloween. I learned this arrangement from the wonderful teachers at Doane School of Music when I was teaching for the TDSB in Toronto. Hope everyone had a Happy Halloween! Neat! Sweet! Petite!🎃 Doane Music School

He was so excited to show me he picked out the melody to one of his favourite pop songs. The sheet music was way to advanced for him to read when I searched it up. We simply added the bass notes to enhance his right hand. We spent the lesson trying out the best fi*****ng for both hands. I LOVE it when my students discover something that motivates them to make music independent of our lessons. Their life long love of music is what I strive for here at Set the Tone for the Love of Music.

At Set the Tone for the Love of Music, one of my main goals is to create a space where learning and enjoying music is something my students will want to do for their life span. I love to see and hear how they apply their skills to other instruments or musical experiences like choir and band. He was so excited to show me what he could do on his saxophone after only two band rehearsals! In my opinion, beginner Band teachers are exceptional educators. 🎵

When you are a brand new, six year old piano student and you practice everyday since your first lesson three weeks ago…you can play a duet with your teacher like a pro at the beginning of lesson #4!

Can you see the delight brother and sister experienced during a Family Music class at Set the Tone for the Love of Music? Mom was also present (and smiling). She snapped the picture while music was in action.

What are some ways that you enjoy music with your family? I would love to hear about it in the comments below.

Truth be told, he let himself in and only had permission to stay because the adult piano player loves little dogs. He also had to join a few of my youth lessons this week due to some chimney repair work that was stressing him out. His cuteness proved to be very distracting, so unfortunately, he cannot continue to join Mommy at work. 🐾
