To be able to help each child meet the individual goals set out by their families and support workers we have to have extra support workers, and these funds will go directly to that!

Good morning parents,

As many of you know our program works with many different families. We work with parents and their children, many of whom have health and development diagnosis’ that require extra assistance. This is why our Centre has lower ratios then almost every other child Care Centre in HRM.

In order to continue this level of support our Centre must depend upon donations to help us offer extra support in the classrooms to help children work on development goals, eating plans, mobility and social challenges. As a charitable non-profit program, we depend on our parents and communities to help with fundraising so we can continue offering such a high level of support for the children who need it.

For example we have many children with special eating needs and we can have two staff working with a single child to have an adult prompting and an adult helping them with a response. We might have a child who needs help working with peers and so break children out in pairs to practice their communication. Programs like this can only happen with support so we can have the staff on hand to do them outside of the regular ratios.

Did you know that regular ratios for toddlers are 1 teacher to 6 toddlers, and 1 teacher to 8 preschoolers? We strive to offer 1:3 or 1:4 to give a very enhanced ratio, sometimes doing 1:2, but this is only possible with community support.

We are asking parents to share this in any way they can over the next 30-45 days so we can try to raise as many funds as possible. We chose this number as that is roughly the amount a minimum wage staff, not even a levelled staff, would earn in a single year. Please share it wherever you can, on whatever medias you can and explain why programs like ours are so important. If your work places want to help maybe they can do something to raise funds like a bake sale or a casual day, every donation is appreciated.

We are one of the few Centre’s not experiencing staffing shortages, in fact we have people asking to work here because they see the power of the work we do. Unfortunately the world often misses crucial programs like this because they are not in the public eye, its our chance to change that!

We are very excited for the Touch-A-Truck event happening May 27th in Port Hawkesbury. Many local companies are bringing their vehicles to explore and we can not thank them enough.
Port Hastings, West Bay and St. Peter's Volunteer Fire Departments; Jamie MacKay Trucking; Kenny Cass; Sullivan Fuels; John Thomas; McEwans Towing and Hotshot Services; Canso Ford; Atlantic First Nations Water Authority; Zutphen Equipment; Ohio West Road Trucking; High and Dry Ditching; NS Public Works (Inverness South), RCMP to name a few.
Admission is by donation/pay what you can as we want EVERYONE in our communities to be able to enjoy this great event! 😊

The board of the HACL is looking for some members at large and a person to fill our treasure position.

We are so incredibly thankful for such and amazing group of people supporting the Halifax Developmental Centre for Early Learning.

This weekend IKEA, our amazing staff, some friends and even some of our families gave up their time and worked their buttocks (and backs) off to help transform our classrooms, office and other rooms.

The change is incredible, we will be posting before and after photos and having an open house in about 2 weeks.

So many companies donated snacks and food to feed the volunteers.
