Reminder for parents, tonight is Curriculum Night at Halifax Central Junior High ... our school is also taking the opportunity to collect any toiletries and non-perishable food items for the community impacted by the fire in Middle Sackville this week ... please donate if you can (pun intended).

********************
FROM PRINCIPAL BUNIN:

Our thoughts are with the many families in the Middle Sackville community who have been affected by the recent fire at the 60 unit apartment building that has left over 150 people in need of shelter. In this time of need, we want to come together as a school community to offer our support.

At our upcoming Curriculum Night on Thursday, September 18, we will be collecting donations for the displaced families. If you're able to bring them with you, we're collecting the following items:

- Non-perishable food items
- New hygiene products (toiletries)

For anyone unable to make it but who would still like to donate, please send the items with your child to school. Everything will be delivered to Middle Sackville after school on Friday.

We'll have a designated drop-off area near the school's main entrance. Your generosity and support means so much to these families, many of whom have lost everything.

In the neighbourhood ... opportunity for community members to volunteer with the "Walking School Bus" that is helping lower elementary children get to Tupper without being driven, and helping them learn how to safely navigate the neighbourhood.

A Note for Parents Answering "What are School Advisory Council and Home & School @ Halifax Central Junior High?"
*********************

Welcome to the Halifax Central Junior High community! As a new (or returning) parent, you may hear about the School Advisory Council (SAC) and the Home & School Committee and wonder what they are and what they do. Here's a quick guide to help you understand their roles.

What is a School Advisory Council?
---------------------
Just like in elementary school, the School Advisory Council is a volunteer group that works to support student success and improve the school. The SAC is an important link between the school, home, and the HRCE. It provides advice and recommendations to our principal and the Regional Centre for Education.

Who is on the School Advisory Council?
---------------------
School Advisory Councils are made up of a variety of members who represent the different groups within the school community. This typically includes: Parents/Guardians, Principal Bunin, Teacher Representation, Staff Representation, Community Members, and Students (new in Junior High)

What is the Home & School Committee?
---------------------
The Home & School Committee is a separate group that works to fundraise and create opportunities to improve the physical space and connect our community to the school. While the SAC focuses on academic policy and advice, Home & School works to improve the other aspects of junior high life for the kids through special projects and outreach (e.g. community volunteering, dances, etc.).

Who is on the Home & School Committee?
---------------------
This committee has some support from administration and staff but is made up entirely of parent volunteers.

Interested in Learning More?
---------------------
We will have an extended information session this Thursday in the library at 5:30 p.m., just before Curriculum Night. We invite all interested parents to come and learn more about how you can get involved!

Hello Central Junior High Families,

The home & school Committee is hosting their first official meeting of the 2024-2025 School Year on October 23rd at 6pm in the Library at Central.

All parents are invited.

We encourage folks to get involved as we organize events to help care for the school and create opportunities for our students to connect with the community.

We need volunteers and setting up a great plan for the school year in October will ensure we have success in our efforts throughout the year.

As examples, we have hosted community breakfasts with the students, created opportunities to showcase student work and art, fundraised for school grounds improvements, and (this year) are going to support dances for the students at the school.

If you are interested, please come join us on October 23rd. If you have any questions, please reach out to me, Jacob Ritchie via email ... [email protected], Facebook Messenger, or text.

Regards,
Jacob

A hearty "welcome back" to our returning Grade 8 & 9 students and families ... and a warm welcome to all our new students and their families!

To our current members ... please share this page with new parents at the school.

Our Home & School Committee and our School Advisory Committee both have opportunities to get involved in the community. Lots of great projects to join in progress and lots of space for new ideas and energy.
