🔬This fund supports the co-creation of research, programs, and climate adaptation solutions with communities to ensure they are grounded in local needs, traditional knowledge, and lived experiences.

The fund awards projects ranging from $10,000 to $30,000. Current faculty, staff, technicians, postdoctoral fellows, and students from the following institutions are encouraged to apply:

In January 2026, the entry into force of the Treaty on the High Seas marks a major milestone for international ocean governance, strengthening cooperation between our two countries.

đŸ”č Strengthened collaboration

The recent appointment of an ocean expert in France–Canada relations, based in Halifax, demonstrates our commitment to strengthening scientific and environmental partnerships.

đŸ”č Initiatives following UNOC

One year after UNOC in Nice, the IPOS platform reaffirms its central role in ocean sustainability. Furthermore, Ocean North has become the first Canadian member of the Paris-based Ocean & Climate platform, symbolizing our shared ambition.

đŸ”č A shared goal: 30% protection by 2030

France and Canada are committed to protecting 30% of their marine areas by 2030, an ambitious target for preserving biodiversity.

Are you ready for Ocean Week Canada - Semaine de l'ocĂ©an Canada? This annual national celebration—the largest ocean engagement initiative in the country—has begun!

Coordinated by the Centre for Ocean Literacy Collaboration, this year’s event features more than 550 participating partners and communities from coast to coast to coast. They’ve come together to help everyone better understand, value, and care for the ocean.

Have you heard the news? OFI is excited to welcome the 2025-26 cohort of The Nippon Foundation (æ—„æœŹèȡ曣) - Partnership for Observation of the Global Ocean - POGO Centre of Excellence in Observational Oceanography to Dalhousie University!

Hosted by OFI, in partnership with Dalhousie; the Marine Institute, Memorial University; and the Hakai Institute, the program’s eight international early-career scholars are developing skills to champion ocean observation globally.

While at Dal, the scholars will pursue independent learning projects, gain industry exposure, deepen their understanding of ocean governance with the International Ocean Institute (IOI) Canada, and explore local Indigenous history and ways of knowledge.

The Nunatsiavummiut Art for Sustainability exhibit features artwork created through the Sustainable Nunatsiavut Futures Arts Collective, an initiative of the Sustainable Nunatsiavut Futures project.

The artwork is informed by key issues affecting Nunatsiavut, inviting reflection on how knowledge is formed, whose voices are heard, and how more just and responsive futures might be imagined. The exhibit will feature an opening reception on May 23, followed by a panel featuring three of the artists on May 24.

🌊 Apply for the TCA Opportunities Fund

The Ocean Frontier Institute has launched a new funding opportunity to support short term, collaborative research at the nexus of ocean, climate, and people.

This fund will allow researchers to respond rapidly to time sensitive opportunities (usually leveraging a substantial amount of external funding), and collaborate with external partners and collaborators from government, industry, and other institutions.
‱ Awards of $30,000–$75,000 available
‱ Applicants must be actively involved in the Transforming Climate Action program
