Congratulations to Dr. Marisa Brook for receiving the 2026 Early Career Researcher Award from the Canadian Linguistic Association!
This prestigious award recognizes individuals early in their career who have made outstanding and original contributions to the field of linguistics.

Dr. Brook’s interests in Canadian English and sociolinguistics have garnered her an international reputation, alongside her impressive portfolio of studies. From analyzing a Finnish-influenced variety of English spoken in a small community in British Columbia, to researching the range of languages within marginalized and often overlooked communities in the Maritimes, she has worked tirelessly to bring awareness to the studies of linguistics.

We are honoured to have Dr. Brook as an Assistant Professor in Saint Mary’s Department of English Language and Literature, and the Program in Linguistics, and can’t wait to see what she accomplishes next.

The research was conducted in collaboration with Dr. Andrés Arteaga, Associate Professor in Latin American Studies at Saint Mary's University Halifax, and visiting student scholar Maria Alejandra Sanchez Martinez.
