When Sylvie Gewehr started a bookkeeping and tax business in Haines Junction, it was out of necessity, not a grand entrepreneurial plan.
What she didn’t expect was that it would quietly finance and build the confidence for the business her heart had always wanted: Wildwood Spirit, a herbal practice rooted in Yukon land.
Herbalism has been with Sylvie since her early teens, long before she knew it could be a job.
“I started when I was a teenager… already making tinctures and all those kinds of things,” she says.
“It really never ever occurred to me that it could be a profession.”
The turning point came in 2020, when herbal schools moved online and she could finally study without leaving the Yukon.
A friend then invited her to sell a few tea blends at an open house. They sold well and Wildwood Spirit was born.
Today, Sylvie spends mornings with spreadsheets and tax deadlines, and afternoons in the garden and kitchen, crafting teas, tinctures, and salves, leading plant walks, hosting workshops, and offering consultations.
It’s a constant balancing act between “left‑brain” and “right‑brain” work.
Her approach is deeply values‑driven.
She refuses to market her herbal products outside the Yukon to avoid over‑harvesting local plants, and she’s designed The North Within—a monthly plant card subscription created with artist Alida Thomas—as a way to share Yukon plant wisdom worldwide without depleting local ecosystems.
“I’m doing it for the plants, mostly,” she says.
“If I’m not earning any money with my businesses, I can’t run them and then I’m also not bringing the plants into people’s lives.”
For Sylvie, success isn’t about scale; it’s about impact.
Sometimes, all it takes is overhearing a customer say a Wildwood Spirit remedy finally helped where nothing else had.
