π₯KNOWLEDGE IS POWERFUL π₯
National Drowning Prevention Week (NDPW)
Takes place from July 19 to July 25, 2026, designated by the Lifesaving Society to focus on water safety, planning ahead, and building survival skills. The core theme for 2026 was "Prepare to be Water Smart," coinciding with World Drowning Prevention Day on July 25. Over 400 Canadians lose their lives to preventable water incidents annually.
Key Water Safety Focus Areas
Supervision: Watch children closely, as drowning is quick and often silent.
Lifejackets: Always wear properly fitted personal flotation devices (PFDs) while boating or paddling.
Sobriety: Avoid using alcohol or drugs while participating in aquatic or boating activities.
Open Water Caution: Exercise extra vigilance in natural bodies of water like lakes and rivers, where the majority of drownings occur.
