This week Our Grade 5 students had the opportunity to visit Guelph City Hall, where they got a behind-the-scenes look at how our city is governed and how local decisions are made.
During their visit, students had the chance to meet the Mayor, tour the council chambers, and learn more about how City Council works. They discovered what councillors and city staff do day to day, how decisions are made, and the ways local government serves the people of Guelph.
The visit also provided an opportunity to reflect on Guelph’s history and how our city has grown and changed over the years.
It was a valuable hands-on learning experience that helped connect what students are learning in the classroom with the community they call home!

Christmas Vendor Spotlight 1: Sticks & Stones

“I create framed art made from natural items like pebbles, twigs, sea glass, shells, and dried flowers. Flowers and plants are harvested from my garden and forest, and I dry them the old-fashioned way. Each piece is one-of-a-kind. I also create custom pieces, like family groups or hobbies like golf, fishing, or camping. Recently I added miniature houses to my product list, as well as fantasy boxes with miniature scenes.”

Pet Time in Grade 7! The front of the school was a little extra busy this morning… and full of wagging tails, happy faces and even a couple of beautiful little kittens!
As one of their Walk-a-thon rewards, our Grade 7 students got to bring their pets to school and introduce them to their classmates. It was so much fun watching the dogs meet and interact with each other, and seeing the excitement on the students’ faces as they shared their furry friends with one another. The kittens were definitely a highlight too, bringing plenty of “awwws” as students had the chance to meet these sweet little visitors!
A time full of cuddles and plenty of pet play! What a wonderful reward for all that walking!

Our Grade 4 students had their first visit to Chartwell Retirement Home today! This was their first meeting with the residents that they’ll be getting to know throughout the school year.
Students spent time asking thoughtful questions, listening to stories, and learning about the lives and experiences of the residents. Through these conversations, they began developing important skills in communication, active listening, and building relationships in our community.
This first visit gave students the opportunity to see that learning happens beyond the classroom, through conversation, curiosity, and connecting with people from different generations.
We’re excited to continue learning alongside the residents through our monthly visits and look forward to seeing these new relationships grow throughout the year!

Our Grade 2 students had their first toilet packing session of the school year for Hope House!
Working together, students packed toilet paper rolls that will be distributed to help support people in our local community. It may seem like a simple task, but these small acts of service can make a meaningful difference to someone in need.
It was wonderful to see our students working together, serving with enthusiasm and learning that we can all make a difference when we take the opportunity to help others.
We’re looking forward to many more opportunities throughout the school year for our Grade 2s to learn, serve and care for our community!

This Thanksgiving week, our GCCS community is partnering with The Salvation Army Guelph to help support individuals and families experiencing poverty and food insecurity right here in our city.

Please bring your non-perishable food and essential household items to the school foyer anytime between now and the end of the school day on Friday, October 9.

Did you know? Last year, The Salvation Army Guelph provided:
3,087 food hampers to individuals and families
371 families received diapers, wipes & formula
501 families received toiletries & personal care items
1,182 families received Christmas hamper support
Approximately 150 families each day receive fresh produce, bread and baked goods — that's roughly 30,537 visits each year!
Their shelves are currently at an all-time low, and they need our help.

Every donation makes a difference; we can help ensure that our neighbours have access to the food and essential items they need.

Reading Buddies are back!
There’s something extra special about this year’s Grade 7 and Grade 3 reading buddies - they’re continuing a friendship that began last year!
These students already know one another, so they get to pick up where they left off, continuing to read, learn, encourage and grow together for another year. What a wonderful opportunity for our Grade 7s to encourage our younger students while building confidence, connection and a love of reading.
We can’t wait to see where this year’s reading adventures take them!
