That’s it for year 1 of pro! 🤝🇺🇸 I had lots of fun, but also some injury-related setbacks that came with great learning opportunities.

1️⃣ Surfing Bluelines
The best way to close a gap is to close it early. Most defensemen back up right after a change in possession, actually widening their gap. Instead, match the forward’s speed with forward skating to close the space early and limit fast-break chances
2️⃣ Breakout Option 1: Deception
When you have space, deception is key. At higher levels, forwards get smarter at angling. Use a shoulder dip, foot switch, or fake look to mislead pressure and open up ice. It’s not about doing something fancy—it’s about creating time and space for better options
3️⃣ Breakout Option 2: Absorbing F1 Pressure
When you’re first back and space is tight, absorbing pressure can kill an aggressive forecheck. Most systems send an attacking F1 and a more reactive F2. Leaving the puck for your partner, using a reverse, or bumping it to support helps your team exit clean and iso F2
4️⃣ Early Boxouts
Be your goalie’s best friend. Find your player early, beat them to inside ice. It drains opposing forwards and delays their ability to become a dangerous tip or screen threat. Great D play starts before the puck hits the crease.
5️⃣ Confidence Through Mental Preparation
Every game is different. But your prep shouldn’t be. Confidence comes from consistency. If you’ve done the work, your belief is earned—and that belief is what unlocks elite-level performance. Start owning your mindset, not just your skill set
