Heart Leadership in Action:
At last Saturday's Soul Circle, we casually started talking about community food programs. These are more than food banks, but part of a circular economy to reduce food waste by bringing good food that would normally hit the landfill to communities who are in need.
This cause has been close to my heart for ages. I truly believe that everyone deserves healthy food and produce, no matter their income level. It is a win-win for each person, as well as for public health and community wellness.
When I lived in Toronto, I volunteered for the STOP Community Food Centre. I also organized the Good Food Box for our housing co-op. Then I WWOOF-ed on an organic farm for a summer (I can safely say I am NOT a farmer). Plus I used to be a coffee roaster for a fair trade roastery, and I helped with marketing for a direct trade chocolate project.
Growing, cooking, serving and eating food is truly a universal need and experience.
Recently, I went to a community event in my neighbourhood and experienced the absolute love and kindness of getting a free hot meal through our very own Community FEWD program. I didn't have cash on me to even make a donation. They just said: "if you're hungry, we'll feed you.".
Immediately my heart melted by the generosity and dignity that they deliver the program with. And I remembered all the beautiful things that community food programs do beyond feeding people.
Then I met the lovely folks at the North Harvest Market and found out about their unique program to deliver fresh produce to our neighbourhood. The friendliness, support and community were refreshing.
These kinds of programs give me hope in humanity.
Community food programs are a cause I can bite my teeth into (pun intended). I'm going to research which programs I feel pulled to help out with so I can keep fulfilling part of my purpose as a heart leader in this world.
Are you a community food program flag waver, too?
Please share links and comments about which ones you recommend or which ones bring you joy.
