{read caption} Ways to power up your child’s language (that you are already doing!)
Research shows that when a child is raised in a family with MUCH talking, listening, reasoning, explaining…
Versus a family with LITTLE talking..
The child in the family with MUCH language will have been exposed to more words by the age of 3… (Hart & Risley, 2003)
To be specific, 30 million more words 🤯
Words give power. Here are 5 ways to power up your child’s language:
✨Proper names for things in their environment. When a child asks, “what’s this” or even “why”, they might be wanting the proper names. Giving precise terms empowers children
✨Zoom in to details + parts of things. Children love precision. For instance, we can break down a spoon into its tip, handle and bowl. I didn’t know a lot of these before I became a mom! (And I trained as an English teacher before I became a parenting coach.) Now I can name you all the parts of construction vehicles, human body, etc. I bet you can too 😂
✨ Song, poetry, rhyme, metaphor, adjective. Children are not “too young” for such rich language, in fact, this is the prime time where they soak up language like a sponge. Once, caught in a rainstorm, my 3yo said (accurately) “it’s raining cats and dogs!” She had heard me utter it once, months ago 😱
✨ Tell child oral stories of daily happenings, their birth, and you. Oral storytelling not only cements their sense of identity, the story changes every time you tell it, which means more vocabulary!
✨Name emotions. Even as adults, when someone asked how we are feeling, we need to go beyond saying “ok”, “bored” and “tired”, which are not even emotions! There are >27 emotions, let’s teach children a few of these. Not only is this useful vocab, being aware enough to identify one’s emotions is the first step towards developing healthy coping skills

Whether Montessori had a part in this or not, the list is fairly impressive.
This afternoon due to poor air quality, children will play in the gym.
