Daniel Tramble was 51 when they left their job and shifted a career towards learning about proper golf course maintenance through the Turfgrass Management Studies offered through SCS and Guelph Turfgrass Institute. "I learned over a year how much I love to learn and am in my 5th program and will finish in December".

As a passionate lifelong learner, Daniel shared that our instructors have been encouraging, knowledgeable, and helpful. "U of G has given me some of the best lifelong learning and I really am happy where I am at in life and it is due to the courses and the applied focus (...) I am doing better than I ever imagined and learning skills for my job at the golf course."

Help us in wishing Daniel the best of luck in a hope to become an assistant superintendent! 👏

Thirty years after putting her interest in biology on hold, mechanical engineer Hedia Balkhi is exploring the science behind the plants she has loved for years. As a student in the Horticulture Certificate, she's combining hands-on gardening experience with new scientific knowledge, and even turning her sixth-floor balcony into a thriving food forest.

Her story is a wonderful reminder that it's never too late to grow your knowledge. "This course has reminded me that growth doesn't only happen in a garden. Sometimes it takes 30 years to come full circle. My plants are growing differently this season, but so am I."

Meet Lynsey, a Soils and Plant Growth student! 🌻

Lynsey has an MSc in Science Communication and Public Engagement and is currently working towards completing her Horticulture Certificate with SCS. "When I finish my last Guelph course I am considering enrolling in a second undergraduate program to study botany."

Lynsey's experience with our online flexible courses made a difference in her approach to learning, sharing “Learning as an adult can be a lot more fun without the pressure of studying full time, and the structure of these Open Learning courses is part of that."

Lynsey is using the Horticulture Certificate as a way of complementing her experience working in the industry, and to add a credential to her varied toolbelt while translating her new knowledge back into the garden. “Down the road I would like to work in landscape architecture, for a botanic garden, or own a horticultural business. I've worked in horticulture on and off over two decades, so this certificate, along with recently finishing the Alberta master gardener program, is a way to formalize my practical experience. While I have worked on many other people's homes and projects, I recently bought my first home with my own garden, and have been planting my dream food forest style landscape while completing this certificate, which has helped me plan how to make the landscape work successfully.” 🏡

If you're interested in expanding your own possibilities in the garden or in your career, Fall 2026 Horticulture courses start September 14 and are currently open for registration: https://uoguel.ph/agriculture
