We have been so busy enjoying the return of spring at playschool that we haven’t shared an update in a while! Here’s a little snapshot of all the learning and exploring happening in May.
Our praying mantis ootheca hatched, and we now have about 150 tiny mantis nymphs in the classroom! The children have loved observing them closely and helping care for them while learning all about their life cycle.
We also received our Painted Lady caterpillars, and have been amazed at how quickly the caterpillars have grown. The caterpillars are now forming chrysalises, and we are so excited to release the butterflies at our year-end party on Friday!
We celebrated spring with a beautiful watercolour tulip provocation, an outdoor picnic and adventures climbing and playing on the “big mountain” behind the playschool.
Inside the classroom, the children’s loose parts creations continue to become more detailed and imaginative each week. We love seeing their ideas come to life through play.
Our afternoon class also had the opportunity to visit and hold baby chicks, it was such a special experience for the children!
To celebrate Mother’s Day, the children created beautiful flower bud vases and carefully arranged dried flowers.
May has been such a fun month at playschool!
Parents — don’t forget to check out our summer reading display in the hallway and take home a free book to enjoy together this summer!

A huge thank you to the Town of Grimshaw and Miss Angie for donating a projector to the Playschool. The children are loving exploring light, shadow and reflection!

Last week at Playschool was all about practical life skills!
We planted sunflower seeds, washed dishes in the water table, and introduced an exciting new centre: a Take Apart Centre. After lots of practice using screwdrivers, the children explored old broken appliances, taking them apart piece by piece and discovering what’s inside.
We are looking to add to the Take Apart Centre! If you have any old or broken small appliances (toasters, keyboards, phones, etc.), we would love your donations to keep the exploration going.
Thank you for supporting our learning!

Last week we explored fingerpainting at playschool!
Messy play is so important for preschool-aged children. It allows them to take the lead, explore with their hands, and experience a wide variety of texture and materials.

Why is messy play important?
-Supports brain development
-Encourages creativity and self-expression
-Builds fine motor skills
-Promotes problem solving skills
-Foster independence and confidence
-Nurtures language skills

A friendly reminder to please send your child in play clothes that can get messy - learning is messy work!
