At WQT Worldwide Quran Thinkers, our Monthly Family Quran Discussion Sessions are created for families who want to engage with the Quran thoughtfully, intellectually, and collectively. These are not lectures or sermons. They are guided, open discussions where participants study, reflect, and reason directly with the Quran in a respectful and welcoming environment.

Each session focuses on a predefined topic shared well in advance, allowing families to prepare through personal study, family conversations, and Quranic research. Participants are encouraged to bring their understanding, questions, and relevant Quranic Ayahs to the discussion. The purpose is not blind agreement, but conscious engagement that leads to clarity, conviction, and peace.

Families attend together, adults and children alike, creating a powerful space for shared discovery and learning. Every participant contributes. Every voice matters. Each session strengthens understanding through dialogue, reflection, and verification rooted in the Quran itself.

After exploring the foundations of Deen and Emaan, understanding Emaan as an active process of Amanu, and reflecting on what it truly means to reach a state of Aman through knowledge and reason, we now move toward one of the most critical and serious Quranic concepts.

This session focuses on what the Quran describes as the gravest wrongdoing, Shirk, and its deep connection with Auftara and divisions within Deen. These concepts are often misunderstood, simplified, or avoided, yet they sit at the heart of Quranic accountability, justice, and unity.

For this upcoming family group discussion, let’s start with the *Concept of Emaan & Kufar* as these form one of the basic fundamentals of understanding Deen.

Have you ever wondered what if, in light of the Quran:
* The words *Emaan and Aman* are not blind faith or belief but instead to seek knowledge, to use intellect in order to be at peace and in conviction with the five fundamentals of Emaan ( Allah, Malaik, Kitaab, Rasool/Nabiy, & Youm-e-Akhira).
* The word *Momin* is not a believer, but a seeker, someone who is peaceful with their surroundings and those who are upholders of their Emaan (Covenant with Allah).
* The word *Kufar* is not disbelief, but to hide and conceal, not to use one’s intellect and to blindly follow and believe others (their elders, religious leaders, whatever they are told).
* The word *Kaafir* is not a disbeliever but someone who is a blind follower without using their intellect or seeking knowledge, someone who is self-righteous, proud, and arrogant, and someone who is not at peace with others and is stingy, not using their wealth and time for the benefit of others.

Family Quran Session #1: Deen vs Mazhab & Muslim’s Current State

Most of us use Deen and Mazhab interchangeably. But the Quran paints a very different picture…
Quran defines Deen as:
1. Laws & Rules that guide our lives
2. A Debt until our last breath
3. A system of Reward & Punishment (Duniya & Akhira)
4. In alignment with the Fitrat of Allah, helping us reach our fullest potential

Deen = Na’imat (Success, Unity, Peace, Prosperity)
Mazhab = Man-made rituals that divide, restrict, and waste human potential

Look around at our current state as Muslims: If you see
- Muslims divided into sects, fighting each other instead of standing united
- Islamophobia rising, Muslims seen as “problems” not as benchmarks or role models
- Endless rituals, wastage of valuable resources and potential but little impact, or societal benefit.
Then it means it’s not Deen that we’re following but the different types of religion and Mazaahib.

This is because Quran has been Mahjoor (Abandoned, restricted and migrated away from) Reference- Quranic Ayah (25:30). This means Quran has been abandoned, restricted, or migrated from, and blindly handed over to scholars

The Quranic solution is a Rational Approach to Deen: This means
1) Use intellect, not blind following (2:170)
2) Seek facts, not emotions (49:6)
3) Follow Allah as the only Hikm (45:6, 39:3)

Let’s stop following man-made Mazaahib… and return to Allah’s perfected Deen.

IS YOUR DEEN REALLY FROM ALLAH …… OR IS IT FROM MAZHAB?

Quran defines Deen as:

In simple terms: Deen is a complete code of life with clear boundaries of freedom, accountability, and the roadmap to reach our highest potential.

Mazhab, on the other hand:
• Is man-made, based on personalities & rituals
• Divides us into sects

• Lacks Na’imat (unity, prosperity, success, and peace)

Deen brings Na’imat:
• Success & prosperity in all walks of life
• Unity & common purpose
• Being seen as role models & inspiration

But here’s the shocking part:
Most Muslims today take Quran, Sunnah, Ijma, and Qiyas as “sources of Deen.”
Yet… Quran never names Sunnah of any Rasul or Nabiy, Ijma, or Qiyas as sources of Deen.

Allah is the only Hikm (authority, lawgiver, and judge), and Quran is the only source of Deen.
No wonder [25:30] tells us: “My people have Mahoor (migrated away from, restricted and abandoned) this Quran.”
