Exciting news from our sister lab Sanford Underground Research Facility! A rare particle interaction that could be interpreted as a signal from a potential dark matter candidate in the LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) experiment. This is a very tantalizing result that helps lead the way for future xenon experiments.

Key Takeaways Dark matter is the mysterious substance that accounts for the vast majority of matter in our universe. LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) is a world-leading dark matter detector and specializes in searching for WIMPs, or weakly interacting massive particles. A new LZ study found one particle interaction....

Meet Ahmed! This summer, Ahmed worked in our IT department on the modernization of the auditorium control system and collaboration infrastructure at SNOLAB. Ahmed says: “My favourite experience was presenting my summer project at CASST 2026 and placing 3rd overall out of 56 contributions. It was especially rewarding to share a project that had grown from troubleshooting a legacy system into helping shape the future of one of SNOLAB’s main collaboration spaces.”

Ahmed is returning to Laurentian University - Université Laurentienne this fall for the third year of his Bachelor of Computer Science degree.

Did you know the largest neutrino telescope in Canada is taking shape in the Pacific Ocean? The Pacific Ocean Neutrino Experiment (P-ONE) is a large international collaboration that will build on Canada's neutrino research capacity. Testing of P-ONE's underwater detector modules is underway now in Vancouver Harbour. Ocean Networks Canada

Scientists have tested a unique telescope in Vancouver’s waters as they bid to open a new window on to the universe. But this is no ordinary telescope: it is the first piece of a next-generation neutrino telescope that will be plunged thousands of metres into the Pacific Ocean.

How do neutrinos from deep within the Earth make an impact on the science that we are doing at SNOLAB? Science journalist James Dinneen journeys deep underground where he learns about how the SNO+ experiment searches for geoneutrinos. Read the full story from Quanta Magazine here:

A global constellation of neutrino detectors is creating a never-before-seen view of the radioactive elements that power Earth’s tectonic heat engine.

Last week, the McDonald Institute held a “Beading Astroparticle Physics” workshop at their annual meeting. This workshop was led by Dr. Danielle Lussier and Dr. Gregg Wade, where they taught attendees how to implement Indigenous perspectives in their research. Learn more about how Indigenous Knowledges and Perspectives can be used to explore astroparticle physics here: https://mcdonaldinstitute.ca/beading-astroparticle-physics/
