Our current M2 cohort will be defending their theses throughout the school on April 16th and 17th. You can find a schedule of the defenses attached to this publication or posted around the school. All are invited to attend!

The thesis at MSoA is a self-driven research project making up an important part of our M.Arch program. Working with a full-time faculty member as their advisor, students spend 8 months exploring an architectural topic or question of their choosing. The process can involve research, hands-on making, fieldwork and site visits, interviews, community work, and design.

Students present their work for 25 minutes, followed by a period of questions and discussion from the thesis jury consisting of an External Examiner and a Second Reader. These visiting readers are seeing the thesis for the first time, and will help us determine if the thesis is an acceptable academic work. Information about these jury members can be found on the posters.

Congratulations to Professor Steven Beites on being featured on CBC’s The National.

The interview focused on Canada’s housing crisis and the need to rethink construction approaches to meet growing housing demand. The feature highlights how research at the Institute for Northern Housing Innovation addresses these challenges through the integration of automated construction practices and robotic programming on construction sites to improve efficiency, accelerate construction timelines, and support workers.

This recognition reflects the MSOA’s commitment to advancing accessible, sustainable and affordable housing for communities in Northern Ontario.

L'interview portait sur la crise du logement au Canada et la nécessité de repenser les méthodes de construction pour répondre à la demande croissante en matière de logement. Le reportage met en avant la manière dont les recherches menées à L’Institut pour L’innovation en Habitation Nordique relèvent ces défis grâce à l'intégration de pratiques de construction automatisées et de programmation robotique sur les chantiers, afin d'améliorer l'efficacité, d'accélérer les délais de construction et de soutenir les travailleurs.

The MSoA is proud to announce that Prof. Steven Beites has received the award for Best Full Paper at the 2026 ACSA Annual Conference in Chicago for his research entitled: Technology, Ecology and the Housing Crisis.

This award, selected by the ACSA College of Distinguished Professors, along with the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA) which represents all accredited professional degree programs in the United States and Canada, recognizes the Best Full Paper on outstanding peer-reviewed research and on its contributions to research, scholarship, and creative excellence.

The last event of the Winter 2026 Laurentian Architecture Lecture Series is scheduled for Monday Mar.16 at 5:45 pm in the Lecture Hall. The international speakers will be Canadian-Swedish architect and Full Professor Marie-Claude Dubois (Lund University, Sweden) and Fouad Khalil (Modly Design, Birmingham, AL, USA), who will talk about the design of a major mass timber building in Sweden from the perspectives of the architect and daylighting consultant. This lecture is presented by the Northern Ontario Society of Architects (NOSA), in collaboration with the Ontario Association of Architects. It is free and open to all.

Marie-Claude Dubois is Professor in the Department of Building and Environmental Technology at Lund University (Sweden), where she supervises theses, teaches undergraduate and graduate courses, and participates in international research projects. She previously served as sustainability specialist at White Arkitekter (Sweden) from 2012 to 2020, Associate Professor at Laval University’s School of Architecture from 2003 to 2010 (Canada), and senior researcher at the Danish Building Research Institute from 2001 to 2003 (Denmark). She is the main author of the book Daylighting and Lighting under a Nordic Sky and has contributed to the design and environmental certification of numerous buildings in Scandinavia and internationally. She has also delivered many public lectures and scientific communications on daylighting, lighting, building simulation, solar shading, solar energy, and climatic design.

Fouad Khalil has over twenty years of experience as a designer, manager and technologist in the US and overseas. Prior to forming Modly, he served as BLOX director of design and as creative director at White Arkitekter (Sweden), the largest architecture firm in the Nordics, where he was lead designer on several significant projects. His experience is also rooted in prefabrication and offsite construction. Fouad was also a member of the corporate leadership team at White and led several R&D and technology initiatives at the company. In addition to his professional activity, he has served as a visiting critic at a number of academic institutions. He is an Auburn Graduate and earned his B.Arch. there in 2000.

The lecture qualifies for two (2) Ontario Association of Architects Continuing Education Structured Learning Hours.

Les conférenciers internationaux seront l'architecte canado-suédoise et professeure titulaire Marie-Claude Dubois (Université de Lund, Suède) et Fouad Khalil (Modly Design, Birmingham, AL, États-Unis), qui parleront de la conception d'un grand bâtiment en bois massif en Suède du point de vue de l'architecte et de la consultante en éclairage naturel. Avant de fonder Modly, il a occupé le poste de directeur de la conception chez BLOX et de directeur créatif chez White Arkitekter (Suède), le plus grand cabinet d'architecture des pays nordiques, où il a été designer en chef sur plusieurs projets importants. Son expérience s'étend également à la préfabrication et à la construction hors site. Fouad a également été membre de l'équipe de direction de White et a dirigé plusieurs initiatives de R&D et de technologie au sein de l'entreprise. En plus de son activité professionnelle, il a été critique invité dans plusieurs établissements universitaires. Il est diplômé de l'université d'Auburn, où il a obtenu son B.Arch. en 2000.

La conférence donne droit à deux (2) heures de formation continue pour l'Ontario Association of Architects.

The Hybrid Tectonic Systems Workshop was hosted last month at The School of Architecture, Art and Design, University of Minho in Portugal, and led by Professor Steven Beites of the MSoA and Bruno Figueiredo and Filip Brandão of the EEAD. Four students participated in the workshop, where they led the wood design incorporating bending and kerfing processes.
The cross-collaborative workshop introduced students to the design potential of hybrid tectonic assemblies, with a focus on timber and 3D printed concrete (3DPC). The participants explored the articulation between structural, formal, and assembly logics, investigating the integration of timber elements with components produced through 3D printing of cement-based mortars.
The workshop was organized by the McEwen School of Architecture, Institute for Northern Housing Innovation, – School of Architecture, Art and Design, and .hub.eaad.um – Architecture, Construction and Technology Hub.

L'atelier sur les systèmes tectoniques hybrides s'est tenu le mois dernier à l'École d'architecture, d'art et de design de l'Université du Minho au Portugal, sous la direction du professeur Steven Beites du MSoA et de Bruno Figueiredo et Filip Brandão de l'EEAD. Quatre étudiants de ont participé à l'atelier, où ils ont dirigé la conception du bois en intégrant des processus de cintrage et de rainurage.
Cet atelier collaboratif a permis aux étudiants de découvrir le potentiel de conception des assemblages tectoniques hybrides, en mettant l'accent sur le bois et le béton imprimé en 3D (3DPC). Les participants ont exploré l'articulation entre les logiques structurelles, formelles et d'assemblage, en étudiant l'intégration d'éléments en bois avec des composants produits par impression 3D à partir de mortiers à base de ciment.
L'atelier a été organisé par la McEwen School of Architecture, L’Institut pour L’innovation en Habitation Nordique, – School of Architecture, Art and Design, .hub.eaad.um – Architecture, Construction and Technology Hub.

The next event of the Winter 2026 Laurentian Architecture Lecture Series is scheduled for Monday Feb.23 at 5:45 pm in the Lecture Hall. The guest will be architect Anne-Marie Armstrong (AAmp Studio, Toronto, ON / Portland, ME, USA). This lecture is co-organized with Black Print (the Black Student Architecture Collective at the MSoA). It is presented by the Ontario Association of Architects and it is free and open to all.

Anne-Marie Armstrong is an architect and educator. As a principal and co-founder of AAmp Studio, Anne-Marie’s professional practice has a diverse portfolio of projects in the US and Canada. AAmp’s work has been widely published in recognized design publications, such as Architectural Record and Dwell, and has received awards from the American Institute of Architects (AIA), Architect Magazine, The Architect’s Newspaper, and Twenty + Change, amongst others. AAmp recently received an AN Award for Best Small Practice in Canada. Anne-Marie is an Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream at University of Toronto’s John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape and Design. Through her practice, teaching and research, Anne-Marie is committed to increasing diversity, access, and inclusion within the field of design. Anne-Marie is a founding member of Black Architects and Interior Designers Association (BAIDA), and formerly on the Board of Directors of People for Education. Anne-Marie holds a Bachelor of Architectural Studies from University of Waterloo and a Master of Architecture from Yale University, where she studied on a U.S.-Canada Fulbright Award.

On Feb.23, the MSoA will welcome Anne-Marie Armstrong from AAmp Studio (Toronto, ON / Portland, ME, USA), and on Mar.16 we will hear from international speakers Marie-Claude Dubois, Canadian-Swedish architect and Full Professor (Lund University, Sweden) and from Fouad Khalil (Modly Design, Birmingham, AL, USA), who will talk about the design of a major mass timber building in Sweden from the perspectives of the architect and daylighting consultant.

The lectures are presented by the OAA. Each lecture qualifies for two (2) Ontario Association of Architects Continuing Education Structured Learning Hours.
