For this week’s Sunnuntain sanapäivä, our featured word is pikkulauantai!
Meaning “little Saturday,” pikkulauantai is a fun Finnish way to describe Wednesday, the halfway point of the week, when the weekend starts to feel just a little bit closer. This is also done in many other Nordic countries.

For this week’s Keittiö Keskiviikot, we’re featuring makaronilaatikko, one of Finland’s classic comfort foods!
Makaronilaatikko is a baked macaroni casserole, often made with ground meat, eggs, milk, and simple seasonings. Warm, filling, and easy to make, it’s a favourite in many Finnish homes.

Our wonderful Finnish language programs would not be possible this season without the generous support of the Sudbury Lions Club!
The Sudbury Lions have generously donated $300.00 to our school this semester, which has helped us purchase school supplies, and pay our wonderful teachers. Thank you Lions for supporting our continued mission of providing Finnish-language learning in Sudbury.

For this week’s Sunnuntain sanapäivä, our featured word is mökkihöperö!
Literally translating to something like “cabin-crazy,” mökkihöperö describes that restless, slightly stir-crazy feeling you get after spending a little too much time cooped up indoors!

A few photos from our intermediate Finnish class, hosted by instructor Timo Posti!
Our students have been working hard, practising their language skills, and continuing to build their confidence in Finnish. Our focus is balancing a fundamental understanding of vocabulary and grammar, while also giving students the tools to use Finnish in daily conversation!
Thank you to our instructor, Timo, and to our small but dedicated group of students who show up every week over Zoom.

For this week’s Keittiö Keskiviikot, we’re featuring mämmi, a traditional Finnish rye pudding!
Often enjoyed around Easter, mämmi is made with rye flour, malted rye, and molasses, giving it a rich, earthy, and slightly sweet flavour. It’s usually served cold with cream or milk and a sprinkle of sugar.
It may not be the prettiest Finnish dish, but it’s definitely one of the most iconic!

As our children's classes wrap up this week, we want to thank the wonderful students and parents who showed up for some amazing classes. A big part of our school is combining the many wonderful cultural aspects of Finns with the language, and our students sure were busy this Spring!
And a special shoutout to our instructors! Norma Rautiainen and Ritva Kaijankoski, without you none of this would be possible!
From scavenger hunts, pulla-baking, and arts and crafts, we're so grateful to see the kids engaged. All-the-while, they get a fundamental understanding of the basics. Numbers, alphabet, useful vocabulary, and grammar.
Thank you to everyone who participated! We hope to see you again in the fall!
