Daniela Grottoli, a Grade 12 student from Lo-Ellen Park Secondary School, has earned the distinction of being among the inaugural cohort of Wolf Scholars that will begin their studies at the University of Torontoโ€™s Faculty of Arts & Science in September 2026.

The Wolf Scholars Program is delivered by the Wolf Cooper Foundation in partnership with the University of Torontoโ€™s Faculty of Arts & Science and the Munk School of Global Affairs & Public Policy.

Among the most immersive undergraduate scholarship programs globally, valued at over $100,000 per student, Wolf Scholars will develop as multidisciplinary thinkers, gain first-hand global exposure through international travel, and have the opportunity to complete internships at some of the countryโ€™s leading and most respected organizations.

Rainbow District School Board Chair, David Farrow, commended Daniela Grottoli for her outstanding achievement. โ€œWe are so proud of Daniela for having been selected to be a Wolf Scholar. What a tremendous opportunity for Daniela to pursue her dreams and make her mark in the world. We extend our deepest gratitude to the Wolf Cooper Foundation and the University of Toronto for launching the next generation of Canadian leaders through this generous scholarship program.โ€

Daniela Grottoli will study social sciences and is particularly eager to engage with experts at the Munk School of Global Affairs & Public Policy. Daniela intends to apply interdisciplinary insight to a career in policy and law, addressing complex societal issues and improving the systems that shape peopleโ€™s lives through innovative, research-based solutions that leverage technology.

โ€œDaniela Grottoli has demonstrated strong leadership skills throughout her secondary school studies, in her school and in her community,โ€ said Bruce Bourget, Chief Executive Officer, Rainbow District School Board. โ€œShe has proven that anything is possible with passion, purpose and positivity. We wish Daniela continued success, knowing she will lead by example as a Wolf Scholar.โ€

โ€œWe are incredibly excited to welcome the inaugural cohort of Wolf Scholars. Chosen from more than 1,000 applicants, these 16 young Canadians embody what it means to be a Wolf Scholar: deeply curious about the world, motivated to build and lead, and grounded in strong character,โ€ said Andrew Sheiner, Board Chair, Wolf Scholars.

He added: โ€œThe Wolf Scholars program is designed to expand their perspectives and equip them with the skills to lead in a complex and rapidly changing world. At a time when Canada needs thoughtful, principled leaders more than ever, we feel a deep sense of responsibility and optimism in supporting this first cohort, and those who will follow, with the tools and experiences to make a lasting, positive impact.โ€œ

Daniela Grottoli speaks English, French and Italian. She serves as Ward 10โ€™s representative on the Greater Sudbury Youth Advisory Panel, Vice-Chair of the Rainbow District School Board Student Senate, and Student Council President at Lo-Ellen Park Secondary School.

An Indigenous education advocate, KidSport Sudbury Chapter founder and award-winning public speaker on both sport equity and skilled trades and technology, Daniela developed a passion for advocacy.

A longtime hockey goalie and coach, she remains deeply connected to sport. Daniela led STEM outreach workshops through Robotics and is the author of My Very First Robot.

Daniela Grottoli received the 2025 YWCA Young Woman of Distinction Award in recognition of her changemaking contributions to her community. In her personal time, she enjoys walking her dog Thea, sushi outings with friends as well as rowing, hiking and travelling.

โ€œAuthoring my first childrenโ€™s book to help students with diverse interests see themselves reflected in STEM was a defining accomplishment, allowing me to broaden representation and spark early curiosity in fields where many young students donโ€™t yet feel they belong,โ€ said Daniela.

What is she most curious about as she embarks on her undergraduate journey? โ€œIโ€™m curious about how law and regulation can keep pace with rapid advances in artificial intelligence, ensuring innovation is matched with accountability,โ€ she said. โ€œIโ€™m also eager to explore how AI can expand access to diagnostic and specialized medicine, making high quality care more equitable.โ€

โ€œDaniela Grottoli is an all-round student who excels in arts, athletics and academics,โ€ said Pamela Potvin, Principal of Lo-Ellen Park Secondary School. โ€œWe wish Daniela the very best as she pursues her post-secondary studies. She has earned her place as a Wolf Scholar and we couldnโ€™t be prouder.โ€
