The Cooperative Freshwater Ecology Unit (CFEU) was created in 1989 to share resources and create closer, more effective working relationships between government, industry and universities to address important, applied, environmental research questions. In August, 2011 the Vale Living with Lakes Centre at Laurentian University became the official home of the CFEU.

More recognition for our Co-op members!

Dr. Tom Johnston, a Research Scientist at the Ministry of Natural Resources and Cross-Appointed Faculty Member with the School of Natural Sciences, was recognized for 20 years of Ontario Public Service!

Since joining the Ministry and Co-op Unit in 2004, Dr. Johnston's research on the trophic and reproductive ecologies of fishes, food web structure, and contaminant dynamics in aquatic ecosystems has contributed significantly to fisheries management across Ontario.

Congrats to Gisele Roberts, Director, Research & Innovation Services at Laurentian University, for being recognized with the AUTM Canada Award!

Gisele’s work is integral to what we do and we’re very glad to have her support!

We were proud to recognize this year’s AUTM Canada Award recipient at the Canadian Region Meeting.

Gisele Roberts, Director of Research and Innovation at Laurentian University, brings more than 15 years of experience across research administration, intellectual property management, commercialization, and innovation leadership.

At Laurentian, she has led efforts to strengthen IP protection and industry partnerships, supported the university’s first licensing agreement generating royalty revenue, and helped establish the Jim Fielding Innovation Centre.

Her impact extends across the broader community. Gisele served on the AUTM Board of Directors from 2020 to 2023 and continues to contribute through the AUTM Canada Committee. She has also represented Canada at the World Intellectual Property Organization Knowledge and Technology Transfer Leadership Summit.

She is a strong advocate for collaboration, mentorship, and inclusion, and a consistent voice for the Northern Ontario innovation ecosystem.

Lee Haslam, a Senior Research Technician with the Ministry of Natural Resources, was recently honoured for 25 years of Ontario Public Service!

Lee has been an integral part of the Cooperative Freshwater Ecology Unit since he first joined the Coop in 1996. We are proud to have him as part of our research team.

The Living With Lakes Centre was well represented during Research Week at Laurentian University - Université Laurentienne!

M.Sc. Biology students Ellis Albrecht, Kate Pappin, and Karolyn McGovern participated in the 3-Minute Thesis competition.

Faculty members Dr. Brie Edwards, Dr. Jackie Litzgus, and Dr. Mateus Pepinelli presented their work at the 5-Minute Research Insights.

And multiple posters by Lake Centre research staff and students were on display in the Parker Atrium.

A big congratulations goes to Karolyn McGovern for winning 1st place and People's Choice Award at the 3-Minute Thesis competition! Karolyn will now go on to compete at the provincial 3MT competition at Brock University in May.
