What do you call a whole school field trip?
A really good time!!
Today we spent the day at Shubenacadie Provincial Wildlife Park and enjoyed a day outside with the animals. This was also the launch of our first writing cycle. Don't tell the kids we were being sneaky about that though! 🤫

A huge thank you to the Masonic Lodge for their generous donation to the Great Village Breakfast Program. These donations provide the means to ensure every child has an opportunity for breakfast and snack during their learning day.

Thursday October 1 is Orange Shirt Day at Great Village. This is also Treaty Day - a day to commemorate the historic Peace and Friendship Treaties signed between the Mi'kmaq Nation and the British Crown, and to promote public awareness of Mi’kmaw history. Treaty day is also the start of Mi'kmaw History Month, a time to learn about Mi’kmaw culture and heritage.
We are all Treaty People.

Today was the first assembly of the year at Great Village. We celebrated the character trait of responsibility, which we learned about in the month of September. We read The Thundermaker by Alan Syliboy, a Mi'kmaw artist, author, and musician from Millbrook First Nation in Nova Scotia. The story is about a young Mi'kmaw boy who learns about responsibilities, his heritage and his identity. We then celebrated our award winners this month with the Monthly Character Trait award, the Way to Go award, the French award, the Music award and the Phys Ed award. Congratulations! Our October character trait is Respect and we will be learning this through the Grandfather Teaching, Respect.

Today was our Terry Fox Run! Thank you to Ms. McCully for organizing and making sure, even in some misty weather, we tried like Terry.
P-2 ran 23.5 laps or 23.5 km total. Grade 3/4 ran 407 laps or 40.7 km. The distance to Millbrook Arena!

Mr. Pictou, our Indigenous Learning teacher, joined us on Wednesday to teach us the game of Waltes, some Mi'kmaw words game and important information about Orange Shirt Day. On Truth and Reconciliation day on September 30, Mr. Pictou reminded us to do something kind for ourselves, our friends & family and Mother Earth. We look forward to working with Mr. Pictou on art, storytelling and becoming masters at the game of Waltes.
