🩰 FROM SOFT SLIPPERS TO POINTE SHOES

When we think of ballet today, dancing en pointe feels almost inseparable from the art form.

But it wasn’t always that way.

In the early 1800s, dancers began experimenting with rising onto the tips of their toes. Then, in 1832, Marie Taglioni famously performed La Sylphide, helping establish pointe work as a defining feature of Romantic ballet.

Her shoes were nothing like the pointe shoes dancers wear today. They were soft and offered very little support. Balance, strength and technique were everything.

As ballet evolved, so did the shoes—and so did the training required to use them.

This is where ballet’s great teaching traditions become so important.

The Cecchetti Method was built around the systematic development of strength, balance, coordination and control—giving dancers the technical foundation to meet the demands of classical ballet.

From the Romantic ballerinas of the 19th century to the dancers of today, the tools may have changed, but one thing remains:

Technique is what makes the artistry possible.

✨ The history of ballet isn’t just the history of steps. It’s the history of how dancers learned to perform them.

Cecchetti Canada is thrilled to announce the publication of a new book – translated from the original French edition published in 2012 – that provides both personal and professional glimpses into Enrico Cecchetti’s final years, thanks to one of his students, Princess Fatma Enayet-Arfa.

Between 1925 and 1928, Princess Arfa (aka Sylvie Bonneau-Arfa) studied with Cecchetti and grew close to the Cecchetti couple, as witnessed in a chapter containing Cecchetti’s letters to her and her mother. In another chapter, excerpts from Princess Arfa’s own letters to her mother recount the difficult days leading to Cecchetti’s death on November 13, 1928.

Among other things, the book presents rare photographs, a handwritten score composed by Cecchetti to accompany his dance classes and his composition for The Triumph of Terpsichore, a ballet he choreographed.

Cecchetti Canada is grateful to Aram Manukian for bringing this book to our attention and wishes to thank the author, Gilbert Serres, for his excellent collaboration.

Enrico Cecchetti, The Man – Il Maestro is available for sale in both electronic and printed versions.
