Today, on World Teachers’ Day, we celebrate the teachers whose dedication, compassion and creativity shape the lives of students and the future of our communities.

This year marks 60 years since an international recommendation was adopted recognizing the importance of teachers and the need to support, value and strengthen the teaching profession. The 2026 theme, “Standing with teachers: 60 years of protecting the profession, advancing its status and shaping our futures,” is a reminder that strong public education depends on skilled, supported and respected teachers.

Teaching continues to evolve. New technologies, changing student needs and increasingly complex classrooms bring both opportunities and challenges. Through it all, teachers continue to build relationships, inspire learning, support student well-being and help young people develop the skills and confidence they need for the future.

Teachers’ influence extends far beyond the classroom. They strengthen schools, families and communities, and their work has an impact that can last a lifetime.

On World Teachers’ Day, we recognize that work and the people who make it possible.

🧡 Truth and Reconciliation Day at Grassland School 🧡

On Tuesday, our students spent the afternoon learning, listening, creating, and reflecting as part of our Truth and Reconciliation activities.

Students participated in age-appropriate discussions and stories about Indigenous history, culture, identity, belonging, and reconciliation. They created orange footprints with messages about the steps they can take toward a more respectful and inclusive future, and worked together to create feathers and beads for our school Dream Catcher display.

The afternoon also included FNMI games, giving students an opportunity to learn and connect through activity and play.

A special thank you to Cookie for preparing delicious soup and bannock for our students and staff to enjoy. It was a wonderful way to bring everyone together and share a meal as a school community. 🧡

We are grateful to our staff for helping create a meaningful afternoon and reminding our students that reconciliation begins with listening, learning, and taking positive steps forward together.

In recognition of Truth and Reconciliation, we are wearing orange tomorrow (Sept 29th). 🧡 We would also like to invite our community to join us in some special activities. Join us in listening to Indigenous stories to deepen understanding of Truth and Reconciliation. You can also help students make part of a dream catcher or an orange footprint and play Indigenous games. These activities begin at 12:35pm. Please come if you can! 🧡

As we approach National Day for Truth & Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, schools within Aspen View are making special efforts to acknowledge the histories and legacies of residential schools, and to honour survivors, their families and communities.

Reconciliation-related initiatives in our schools and communities help recognize the painful legacy of residential schools and deepen our understanding of how we can work together toward a better future for all. Schools may hold activities and observances in the days leading up to September 30 and will share information through their social media accounts and other communication platforms.

We encourage members of our school communities to take part in National Day for Truth & Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day observances, including wearing orange as a symbol of remembrance, reflection and a shared commitment to reconciliation.

All Aspen View Public Schools facilities will be closed on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, in recognition of the National Day for Truth & Reconciliation.
