Bedrock and Brambles

Bedrock and Brambles Forest homesteading, self-sufficiency, homeschooling, wellness, chickens & goats.

Andrew and his three children, Auren, Fern, and Meer, are longtime homesteaders managing their small farm and woodlot just south of Gooderham, Ontario. Bedrock and Brambles is named for the rugged shield country where they’re raising chickens and goats, building hugelkultur beds, and sharing their knowledge and experience with visitors. Bedrock and Brambles is a forest homestead meant to support A

ndrew and his family, but is also an example of creative and regenerative agriculture on the Canadian shield with a long term vision for community resiliency, meaningful lifestyle, and change. Bedrock and Brambles is best known for breeding Gold-Laced Wyandotte chickens, but also keeps a herd of Nigerian Dwarf goats for milking. The homestead business also offers events that demonstrate and teach homestead skills, including all things relating to chickens, composting and hugelkultur, wild ecology and woodlot management.

The kids and the dogs are usually busy together. So naturally they nap together too. ❤️

Today was Christmas tree day! Traditionally we choose tall Balsam Firs. There’s not much to them when they’re small, but larger trees have a great Christmas tree top. Our woodlot is a managed forest (MFTIP) so we choose Balsams that are damaged or growing poorly. This one probably won’t survive another year so it’s a perfect choice.

Fern and I made some time for one last fish before the lakes freeze over. If the weather forecast comes true, we should be back on the lake in a few weeks.

We had such a great time this past Summer hosting Coffee with Goats that we'll keep it going through the Winter Saturday afternoons starting at 12:30pm until 3:30pm.
This is a free event that gives us a chance to introduce you to our goats and chickens, and have those conversations about self-sufficiency and homegrown food. Naturally, we'll have specialty coffee and hot cocoa, and fluffy cozy goats to take the chill off.
*Check our Events tab for details.
