⚠️ We're having a highly unusual start to the season and this means very challenging avalanche conditions. The last few days have brought large storms and we're expecting an even bigger storm to come. This means that large avalanches are likely in most areas and could run to valley bottoms. We don't recommend travelling in the backcountry right now.

If you do decide to head out, be sure that you've read your regional forecast, and have the training and experience to identify and stay away from avalanche terrain.

We are closing our training business - Now what?
As life brings different priorities, Chris and I will be stepping away from almost 20 years of teaching recreational avalanche training courses. Our partners at Zac's Tracs are also taking a break this season. We have both teamed up with our friends at HANGFIRE AVALANCHE TRAINING, so you may still see some of our familiar faces:). RETIRED - well folks it has been a great 16 years of teaching you courses! But.. A lot of you have been asking this winter - this officially out..RECALL

In coordination with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and Health Canada, Black Diamond, as the North American distributor for PIEPS, are initiating a voluntary product recall of PIEPS DSP avalanche transceivers in North America.

First and foremost, we ask that if you own a PIEPS DSP PRO, ICE or SPORT avalanche transceiver that you stop using it immediately, unless paired with the new PIEPS hard case carrying system. The reason for the recall is to address the device’s security lock/switch mechanism and its original, provided neoprene carrying system. The lock/switch can change modes unexpectedly when not properly locked or when used in the harness. This can result in the transceiver not transmitting a signal and loss of communication. PIEPS developed a new hard case carrying system for all its PIEPS DSP transceivers that will provide additional safety to ensure the transceivers are locked in the “send” position when in use and remain securely in the “send” position during use. Some research was completed to determine how many wraps around a tree are required to safely lower a 163 khaos. FYI 3 wraps if it’s steep, 4 if it’s almost vertical. We are also ready to provide road building advice to the Kicking Horse Canyon highway project.
