Last week, Ms. Preteau’s Grade 8 Art class explored the art of soapstone carving. The project began with cultural teachings, during which Ms. Preteau shared knowledge and experiences she gained growing up in Churchill and learning from local carvers in her hometown. Students then learned about the tools and characteristics of the stone, while also discussing the importance of intention and energy in the carving process.
Students were encouraged to connect their carvings to a personal story or memory, or to create a new story as their work evolved. Over the course of the week, each student spent approximately 2–4 hours carefully shaping their own unique piece of art.
This project provided a meaningful opportunity to combine artistic expression with historical and cultural practices, while also incorporating elements of Social Studies, Science, English, and Math.
