COCAL is not affiliated with any single labor union and promotes grassroots contingent faculty organizing through events like Campus Equity Week and a biennial conference.

El boletín mensual de actualizaciones COCAL informa al personal académico en situación precaria sobre las noticias relacionadas con este tema en América del Norte y el mundo (creado por el académico Joe Berry a principios del siglo XX), y es generado por el comité editorial del Consejo Asesor Internacional de COCAL. COCAL es la conferencia internacional bianual que ha logrado agrupar a personal académico en situación precaria desde la década de 1990, reuniéndose una vez cada dos años en una ciudad diferente de Canadá - Quebec, Estados Unidos o México, a fin de elaborar propuestas de organización y hacer frente a las situaciones complejas que enfrentan quienes integran la comunidad académica en situación precaria.
