Our research team attended the 26th Congress of the International Society for Electrophysiology and Kinesiology (ISEK) held in Jyväskylä, Finland at the end of June.

The theme of the conference was Mechanisms of human motion & smart technologies with over 400 attendees representing 32 countries across the world. HPL team members presented our research involving high density surface electromyography and motor unit recruitment in the triceps surae as well as our team’s research on the effects of age and speed on multisegment foot kinematics.

It was a great opportunity to connect and reconnect with colleagues and friends from around the world and share the exciting research happening at the HPL! See you in 2028 when the 27th ISEK Congress returns to Canada in Montreal!

Hello and welcome to the Andrew and Marjorie McCain Human Performance Laboratory (HPL) page!

We are excited to introduce the amazing team behind our research!

Co-Directors:
🏛 Dr. Vicky Chester – Professor in the Faculty of Kinesiology with a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering.
🏛 Dr. Usha Kuruganti – Professor in the faculty of Kinesiology with a Ph.D. in Human Factors Engineering and is a registered professional engineer.

Lab Manager:
📌 Brett Speedy – Brett joined the HPL team in his new role as Lab Manager in January, as he finishes his Master’s of Science in Kinesiology. His research focused on multisegment foot and lower extremity biomechanics of gait in young and older adults with pes planus.

Graduate Students:
🎓 Ben Goodyear – Ben is a current master’s student researching the effects of type 2 diabetes on walking patterns in adults with and without peripheral neuropathy.
🎓 Tim Green – Tim recently defended his master’s on a comparison of the myoelectric activity and motor unit recruitment of the gastrocnemius and soleus muscle during isometric plantarflexion and will graduate this fall. He is now pursuing his Ph.D. at Western University while continuing to support our lab as an assistant!

We are looking forward to sharing more about our past and on-going research projects! Stay tuned for more updates!
