Hot Lunch Highlights!

Here are a few pictures from hot lunch this week! We had over 530 orders throughout the week, and it was great to see students trying new meals.

This week, students got their first taste of grilled cheese and tomato soup. For some, it was also their first time trying honey garlic meatballs and rice! We rounded out the week with shepherd’s pie, macaroni casserole, and cheese pizza.

🍉 Fresh fruit and veggie sides

Our sides included fresh cantaloupe, apples, clementines, and bananas, along with a variety of fresh vegetables, green and yellow beans, and carrots.

📊 Learning from food waste

We’ve continued tracking food waste, and as expected, vegetables have been hit or miss. But one thing is clear: the kids love their fruit!

Our biggest food waste number this week was Heinz tomato soup, with 60% coming back uneaten. Was it the brand, or are tomato soup and BPS students just not the perfect match? We’re not sure yet, but one thing we do know is that the grilled cheese was a hit!

We’ve also stopped serving cheese sticks and yogurt as sides for now, as many were coming back uneaten. Since these items are frequently offered through the breakfast program, students may already be getting their fill!

🐷 Looking for a local farmer!

We’re also exploring ways to reduce food waste beyond the kitchen! We’re hoping to connect with a local farmer who might be interested in taking suitable food scraps to feed their pigs or boost their compost supply!

This week, our leftover bread scraps found a second life feeding some very happy chickens! 🐔

🍕 A little peek behind the scenes on Pizza Day!🍕

Our pizza dough arrives frozen and pre-rolled into 16” rounds. We add the sauce, then pop the pizzas into our new kitchen gadget — the proofer/warmer! This handy machine helps the dough rise to perfection. We let the magic happen for about an hour before adding the cheese and baking five pizzas at a time in our convection oven. This week we had 150 orders, which is our biggest pizza order yet! 💙

A HUGE shout-out to Pepper Creek Pizza! Thank you for generously donating pizza boxes this week when our box order was delayed. You kept our lunch service running smoothly!

🍎 Up and Coming at BPS!

Week of October 5–9, 2026

What a wonderful week at Barkers Point School! We enjoyed some beautiful fall weather, exciting celebrations, and opportunities for our students to shine!

🍎 Apple Picking Adventures

Our Grade 4 classes and Kindergarten students enjoyed a trip to Riverview Orchard this week! It was a wonderful opportunity to get outside, enjoy the beautiful fall weather, and make some special memories with classmates.

🐴 A Special RCMP Celebration!

We had a special presentation this week to celebrate our very own Anderson, one of the winners from across Canada in the RCMP's Musical Ride horse-naming contest! Anderson had the honour of naming Crimson, one of the Musical Ride horses. What an incredible accomplishment! We are so proud of Anderson and loved having the RCMP visit BPS to recognize this special achievement!

🏃 Cross Country

Our Grades 2–5 cross-country runners have had a fantastic season! Students showed tremendous effort, determination, and school spirit as they participated in school races and meets. Today, we enjoyed a gorgeous day for our very own BPS Cross Country event!

We are incredibly proud of all our runners for challenging themselves, cheering on their teammates, and representing our school so well! Thank you to Mr. Whipple and Mr. Moore for giving up their own personal time to support our students in these events.

💙 Terry Fox Walk

What a beautiful afternoon for our annual Terry Fox Walk! Our entire school came together to honour Terry Fox and his incredible Marathon of Hope.

Thanks to the generosity of our amazing school community, we raised an incredible $1,278 for cancer research! Thank you to all our students, families, and staff who helped make this event such a success. We are so proud of our BPS community!
