🛸 Innovation in action at the Port of Saint John!
Over the past week, the Advanced Spatial Intelligent Lab (ASIL) team at UNB took to the skies for a series of drone flights. 📸 This fieldwork is part of an exciting joint project to develop a high-accuracy 3D digital twin of the port!
The flights captured detailed data across key areas, including the Marco Polo Terminal, Long Wharf Terminal, and the DP World Cargo Terminal. 🚢⚓
A huge thank you to the Port of Saint John for their incredible support and collaboration in making this project possible. We can't wait to see the final project come together! 🤝🌐

Sunny skies and LiDAR missions! ☀️🛸

Great day in the field with Dr. Shabnam Jabari’s GGE4303 class! We headed out to the UNB Woodlot for a hands-on drone demonstration, giving students a look at the full workflow of a professional aerial survey.

Our mission utilized the DJI Matrice 300RTK equipped with the DJI Zenmuse L1, a powerful payload featuring both LiDAR and RGB sensors. Before taking to the skies, we walked through the essentials of a successful LiDAR mission:

Setting up GNSS receivers over known points.
Laying out ground control targets and performing RTK surveys.
Technical flight prep: IMU calibration, mission parameters, and terrain following.
The weather was perfect for a 60-metre flight, and it was a pleasure to introduce some of our students to the Woodlot🌲 for the first time. UNB woodlot is owned by UNB and used for education, research, and recreation. Proud to support the next generation of Geomatics experts at UNB! 🎓🛰️

The Government of Canada has announced more than $800,000 toward a $1 million project set to help bolster the growth, productivity and security of Port Saint John and the Port of Belledune.

The announcement was made on March 31 on our Fredericton campus, where researchers, industry partners and port leaders gathered to highlight this collaborative effort.

Bringing together experts from multiple disciplines, this project will develop an innovative platform to simulate, prototype and monitor critical underwater operations—advancing safety and efficiency before technologies are deployed in the field.

We are proud to help shape the future of maritime security and innovation in Atlantic Canada!

On April 2nd, 2026, the University of New Brunswick’s annual Engineering Design Symposium took place. The symposium is the culmination of two terms of work for undergraduate Engineering students in their capstone design course typically taken in the last year of their studies.
Held in a hybrid format at the new Allison D. McCain Commons, Head Hall and virtually, this year’s symposium featured work from each Engineering discipline, including five presentations by teams of Geodesy and Geomatics Engineering (GGE) students. In addition, the students developed posters showcasing their projects for visitors to read during refreshment breaks throughout the day.
We would like to thank Dr. David Coleman, Raymund Cronin, Mackenzie Dale and Constantino Solano for their time and service as judges for the GGE presentations. A special and sincere thank you goes to Dr. Michael Sheng, who teaches the course. We truly appreciate his dedication to the classroom and the extensive 'behind-the-scenes' work he performs to ensure the success of our students and the program.
We are also delighted to be able to thank our sponsors for providing prize money for the top three presentations: $1000 from the Association of New Brunswick Land Surveyors went to the first-place winners, Teledyne provided $750 for the second-place winners, McElhanney donated $500 for the third-place winners and Association of New Brunswick Land Surveyors donated $500 for the ANBLS Award.
In addition, the department has one additional award that was presented: the Best Poster Award, based on the poster’s clarity and visual appeal.

On Thursday, April 2, we invite you to join us for the 12th annual Engineering Design Symposium.
A culmination of two-terms’ work for the students in their capstone design courses, including GGE 4700, the symposium will be held both in person in the new Allision D. McCain Commons, Head Hall and virtually. We invite you to register and take part.
The symposium will showcase the design work of approximately 300 final-year engineering students in the product design course and in the disciplinary capstone design courses. Many of the projects are sponsored by local governments, companies and non-profit organizations and span the disciplines of chemical, civil, electrical and computer, geological, geomatics, mechanical, software engineering and TME. Students will present their work in parallel sessions throughout the day, and videos of prototype developments will be on display.
Five geomatics engineering student presentations will cover a range of geospatial topics. In addition to oral presentations, there will also be posters for viewing in the new Allison D. McCain Commons, Head Hall.
This will be an excellent opportunity for alumni and future employers to see the engineering design capability of our senior students and the potential that has been realized through four years of study at UNB. We hope to see you there.
