As the Canadian Research Chair and the President of the International Academy of Education he has played a lead role in developing Canada’s National Longitudinal Survey of Children and Youth and the OECD’s Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA). Dr. Willms has published over 200 research articles and monographs on the family, school and community factors that contribute to the health and wellbeing of children and adolescents.

The 2023 PCAP results show that 5 provinces: Saskatchewan, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Newfoundland & Labrador, and Nova Scotia — scored below the Canadian average of 505.

The number represents thousands of Grade 8 students who aren’t meeting the expected standard in reading.

We know what works.

Research consistently points to two things:

1️⃣ Early screening to identify struggling readers

2️⃣ Structured, systematic phonics instruction

Nova Scotia saw a +20% gain in one year after implementing these strategies. Change is possible, and it starts with evidence-based instruction.

“Letters of My First Name” turns that pride into a simple, screen-free learning experience—helping your child recognize, name, and arrange the letters that spell out who they are.

All you need: paper, letter cards, and a few minutes together.

💫Write their name and say each letter out loud.

💫Point to each one and sound it out slowly.

💫Build it together with letter cards.

💫Try a name swap, spell yours, a sibling’s, or a playmate’s.

✨Bonus: clap out the syllables, or try their last name once they’ve got the first one down.

Turn screen-free time into reading time📖

“Hunting for Letters” is an at-home game that helps kids recognize the letters B, H, R, and I—and connect each one to the sound it makes, just like sounding out a word.

All you need: the printable cards (stan store link in bio) and a few minutes to hide them around the home.

💫 Hide the letter + animal pairs

💫 Go on a hunt together

💫 Say the letter, the sound, and the animal name

💫Sort your matches and celebrate!

Bonus: save the cards and play again with new hiding spots, or have your child draw their own animal for each letter.

Early literacy doesn’t have to feel like worksheets, sometimes it’s just a treasure hunt in the living room.

Every child deserves the chance to become a confident reader and the earlier we catch the gaps, the easier that becomes. 📚
