Happy Women’s History Month!

At the Fredericton Region Museum, we strive to ensure that women’s history is not just a footnote, but an active and essential part of our shared history.

Our collection includes artefacts connected to remarkable women from Fredericton and New Brunswick. These include Athene Florence Burpee, whose career as a bookkeeper is represented in our collection by her graduation photograph; Dr. Madhu Verma, a community leader and founding chair of the Asian Heritage Society of New Brunswick, Madhu Verma Migrant Justice Centre, the Multicultural Association of Fredericton, and others; and Pegi Nicol MacLeod, an influential Canadian modernist artist who spent her summers in Fredericton and played an important role in establishing the Observatory Art Centre at UNB. MacLeod was also commissioned by the National Gallery of Canada during the Second World War to document women serving in the Canadian Armed Forces.

At the museum, we also explore the histories and experiences of Black and Indigenous women through our dedicated exhibits. By bringing these stories into the museum and making them visible, we can better understand the many women who have shaped our communities.
