Simon Wassef, BA’21, is returning to STU to teach in the department of Criminology and Criminal Justice—a program his father Dr. Chris McCormick co-founded more than 20 years ago.

The pair have shared a passion for Criminology for as long as Wassef can remember and this fall, they’ll add a professional layer to their relationship as colleagues.

“It’s a tremendous honour to come back to a department that is so critically acclaimed and widely known among public service professionals in New Brunswick,” Wassef said.

“I love teaching and diving into the material, introducing new ideas, and being challenged by individuals who are learning something for the first time.”

Ben McNamara, BA’07, BEd’08, Emily Nylen, BA’23, and Dr. Anna Scheidler, BA’14, returned to campus for a networking event with the Shad A+ students who are at STU this summer pursuing a unique academic experience that combines elements of STEAM and Entrepreneurship education with enhanced offerings in the social sciences and humanities.

The trio spent the afternoon discussing their careers and sharing the value of their liberal arts education with the students.

A passion for community development first led Emily Nylen, BA’23, to STU and today she is helping address one of Fredericton's most pressing challenges: affordable housing.

As an Affordable Housing Development Coordinator with the City of Fredericton, Nylen works with government and community partners to help advance affordable housing projects throughout the city.

"Every day, I am inspired by the incredibly compassionate people I meet doing important work in this sector. There is a significant need for more affordable housing in the city, so I know my work has purpose,” she said.

A global alumni community—Florence Awde, BA’22, and James Brennan, BA’25, recently connected at an event at UNESCO HQ in Paris, France.

Florence is an Associate Program Officer at UNESCO where she conducts research and policy analysis on early childhood education systems and James is a graduate student at Sciences Po where he is pursuing a Masters in International Governance and Diplomacy.

Thank you to Florence for sharing this photo with us! She mentioned she hoped it would bring a smile to our faces to see two alumni running into each other across the world as part of international discussions shaping a better tomorrow.

Can confirm, we are smiling. ☺️
