The IBME was very busy this summer with 7 Mitacs student interns, 1 UNB summer student, and 2 UNB summer volunteers. They brought their enthusiasm, skills, and fresh perspectives to our research community and contributed to a variety of exciting projects!

Congratulations to Dr. Ian Smith for successfully defending his PhD in Computer Science last week! You did an amazing job!
Ian's thesis titled "Designing Video Games for Training Sport Techniques" explored the intersection of Games, Play, Sports, HCI, and just a touch of biomedical engineering. He used immersive technologies to explore how innovative games can be designed to be both effective training tools and to increase engagement and enjoyment for athletes.
Also, congratulations to his supervisors, Scott Bateman and IBME's own acting director, Erik Scheme.

The IBME is delighted to announce that Chonnawat Chunhawiksit has been awarded the 2026 Bob and Joan Scott Scholarship for Biomedical Engineering.

Chonnawat, a MSc student in Electrical and Computer Engineering, has already completed a MSc and PhD and has returned to pursue another master program at the IBME. He demonstrates an exceptional blend of academic excellence, research achievement, and extracurricular involvement.

This scholarship recognizes Chonnawat's remarkable dedication and promise as a researcher.

MEC is a triennial symposium of special interest to those who work in the fields of upper limb prosthetics and myoelectric control (including upper and lower limb), hosted by the Institute of Biomedical Engineering, a research institute recognized worldwide for its pioneering work in myoelectric controls.

Big ideas. Real impact. 💡✨
Recently, our incredible student team came together for the IBME Build-A-Thon to design and build assistive technologies for people with disabilities.
The project was a bubble gun—reimagined! 🫧🔧
Instead of a traditional trigger (which can be difficult for some kids to use), the team adapted it to work with an assistive switch, making it accessible to user with disabilities. 🙌
These devices were donated to the pediatrics unit at the Stan Cassidy Centre for Rehabilitation, helping bring joy and play to children. 💙

We’re happy to announce that Kristel Desjardins IBME's Manager of Finance & Admin, was awarded UNB’s Distinguished Service Award! 🎉 Kristel cares deeply, whether it’s the over 40 active research projects over which she maintains financial oversight, our prosthetics clinic that treats patients across Atlantic Canada, the 20+ graduate students for whom she actively creates an exciting and inclusive environment, the broader UNB community whether it’s helping others with best practices or helping to keep UNB safe, or the local community whether it’s facilitating running events or

organizing charitable fundraisers. With over 30 years of supporting the UNB community, Kristel is incredibly deserving of this award, and we’re so happy to see her passion recognized!
