Recently, our incredible student team came together for the IBME Build-A-Thon to design and build assistive technologies for people with disabilities.
The project was a bubble gun—reimagined! 🫧🔧
Instead of a traditional trigger (which can be difficult for some kids to use), the team adapted it to work with an assistive switch, making it accessible to user with disabilities. 🙌
These devices were donated to the pediatrics unit at the Stan Cassidy Centre for Rehabilitation, helping bring joy and play to children. 💙

We’re happy to announce that Kristel Desjardins IBME's Manager of Finance & Admin, was awarded UNB’s Distinguished Service Award! 🎉 Kristel cares deeply, whether it’s the over 40 active research projects over which she maintains financial oversight, our prosthetics clinic that treats patients across Atlantic Canada, the 20+ graduate students for whom she actively creates an exciting and inclusive environment, the broader UNB community whether it’s helping others with best practices or helping to keep UNB safe, or the local community whether it’s facilitating running events or

organizing charitable fundraisers. With over 30 years of supporting the UNB community, Kristel is incredibly deserving of this award, and we’re so happy to see her passion recognized!

The IBME crew got together over the weekend for a skate around Officer's Square in downtown Fredericton! New skaters, old pros, and "just watching" types all enjoyed the beautiful winter day ⛸️😀☃️

The 2025 RN Scott Student Merit Award has been presented to MScEE student Dee Carr, recognizing her outstanding contributions to the culture and community at the Institute of Biomedical Engineering (IBME).

Peer-nominated, this award celebrates an IBME student who exemplifies leadership, collaboration, and dedication. Since joining IBME as a summer student in 2023, Dee has consistently gone above and beyond — contributing not only to her MSc research, but also to projects and activities across the institute.

A true ambassador for IBME and an inspiring role model for future students. Well deserved, Dee! 👏

✨ Exciting research spotlight!
PhD Candidate & Research Engineer Katie Campbell joined collaborators from the SCCR at the CSCIRA Conference to present her work: “A Simulation Framework for Modeling Spinal Cord Injury Rehabilitation Outcomes.”
This impactful project is proudly supported by NFREF.

🌍🤖 Our Canada Research Chair (CRC) in Rehabilitation Engineering, Dr. Ahmed Shehata, recently returned from , the IEEE/RSJ International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems in Hangzhou, China.

This year’s theme — “Human-Robotics Frontier” — highlighted the latest global breakthroughs in robotics and AI.

Dr. Shehata teamed up with Manuela Uliano, Marco Controzzi, and Silvia Fattorini of Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna, and Virginia Tech's Dylan Losey to organize a half-day workshop titled:

🎯 “Shared Autonomy and the Sense of Agency: Balancing Control, Effort, and Experience in Human-Robot Interaction.”

This workshop emphasized the critical aspects of control and agency in robotics users, and aimed to inform effective policy development.

Our faculty, staff, and students were on-hand to demo in-house equipment and facilities, including gait-based identification systems, upper limb pattern recognition, and 3D-printed custom prosthetic devices. Visitors explored the Centre for Adaptive Rehabilitation Engineering (CARE), featuring a zero-gravity system, virtual reality platform, and motion capture technology used for rehabilitation research. Things finished off with students poster presentations.
