Back in June, Ashley Kingston and Amanda Saulnier of 🌱Taproot, along with fellow BCBA Emily Forestell (gnb) donated time to speak at the Jobs Unlimited professional development conference. The topic was positive behaviour supports and task analysis.

When an organization encounters barriers, it's easy to focus on the people closest to the problem. Leaders often think that staff need more training, need to be held accountable, or just need to do their jobs.

Sometimes that's true, but behaviour doesn't happen in isolation. Every behaviour occurs within a system.
As behaviour analysts, we're taught to look beyond the individual. The same principle applies in organizations.

Before asking, "How do we change our staff?" We think leaders should also ask:

• Are we aligned?
• Are expectations clear?
• What behaviours are we reinforcing?
• What barriers have we unintentionally created?

The most effective leaders we've worked with don't rush to blame. They stay curious; they examine the system, not just the performer.

That's often where meaningful change begins.

Pride is a celebration of identity, authenticity, and belonging.

It is also an important reminder that many of the people we support live at the intersection of multiple identities. Research consistently shows significant overlap between neurodivergence and 2SLGBTQIA+ identities. Autistic people and people with intellectual and developmental disabilities are part of every community, including the 2SLGBTQIA+ community.

As behaviour professionals, our role is not to determine who people should be. Our role is to create environments where people can safely learn, grow, connect, and live in ways that are meaningful to them.

At 🌱Taproot, we are committed to providing affirming, person-centred supports that respect the dignity, autonomy, and identities of the people we serve.

This month, and every month, everyone deserves to be seen, respected, and supported for who they are.

People with IDD have the same rights to sexual health education as everyone else.

The same right to understand their bodies. To learn about boundaries, consent, relationships, and personal health. To have access to the information their peers grew up with.

Many don't get that access. That gap has real consequences.

At Taproot, we believe every person deserves education that prepares them for life. All of it.
