Active transportation – which includes walking, biking, and other non-motorized forms of travel – is becoming an important part of conversations on how to develop healthier, more connected communities in New Brunswick. The province is looking at ways to increase physical activity through active transportation, and DataNB is joining that discussion.

At the 2026 Trails Summit hosted by Recreation NB, Senior Research Associate Dr. Sandra Magalhaes presented new research showing how close many NBers live to schools, workplaces, and health care facilities — and how neighbourhood design affects whether people can realistically choose active transportation to reach those destinations. The study uses linked administrative data to paint a clearer picture of where safer, more connected routes could make forms of active transportation more accessible.

New Brunswick’s population growth slowed in 2025. 📊

After several years of rapid growth, in 2025 the province’s population increased by only 0.7%, compared with 1.9% in 2024.

The sharp drop in international arrivals played a major role — with fewer work permit holders, permanent residents and study permit holders arriving in the province.

But there’s more to the story: fewer New Brunswickers left the province.

Our latest Population and Demographic Counts update looks at how these changing patterns shaped New Brunswick’s population last year.

With 55 monitoring locations and thousands of measurements, New Brunswick's Surface Water Monitoring Network (SWMN) provides one big picture of the province's surface waters. 🌊

The SWMN tracks the quality of the province’s major river systems by collecting physical, chemical and bacterial data at monitoring stations across New Brunswick.

Each sample is assigned a unique identifier, linking field information to laboratory analysis and helping turn individual water samples into meaningful environmental records.

Today, on Women’s Equality Day, we’re highlighting research that takes a closer look at gender equity within the healthcare workforce. Our featured journal article looks at gender, diversity and earnings in Canada’s chiropractic workforce, highlighting disparities in representation and earnings across gender and ethnic groups.

As more newcomers settle in New Brunswick, understanding how they navigate the healthcare system is important. 🩺

A new study explores healthcare use among newcomers, longer-term immigrants and non-immigrants between 2017 and 2021 using linked health and immigration data.

The findings show that newcomers used walk-in clinics more often and family doctors and emergency departments less often, particularly during their first years in the province. Healthcare use also varied across immigration groups, suggesting that interactions with the province's health system are shaped by their circumstances and familiarity with available services.
