The Gamification Guy
Welcome! If you are looking to tackle the engagement crisis in school, I might have some ideas!

Are you still just handing out digital stickers? 🛑
Most classroom gamification stops at "Rules" and "Goals." We tell students what they need to do, and we give them a prize (like a badge or points) when they do it.
It’s functional, but it’s completely predictable. And predictability kills engagement.
A massive 2025 meta-analysis just revealed that points and leaderboards are not the highest drivers of learning outcomes. The winning combination? Rules + Challenge + MYSTERY. 🔍
When you wrap your standard curriculum in a mystery, you force the brain to close an "information gap." Students have to actively uncover the answer instead of just passively memorizing it.
Swipe through the graphics below to see the data, plus two exact examples of how I use this "Mystery Method" in my Grade 8 Science and Social Studies classes! 🧬📜

Hey 👋🏻
I'll be back to posting content soon! I've been knee deep coding with my AI best friends the ultimate, one stop, gamification tracking and hosting tool. I'm incredibly proud of this, it is doing things I never thought possible!

What is the "foul beast" in your classroom? 🧌
For a long time, mine was the absolute silence and blank stares I got every time I handed out a standard worksheet.
(Sorry if the dice made you jump! 🎲
)
But here is the truth: The human brain is hardwired to pay attention to the unexpected.
It a sudden dice roll on your screen caught your attention mid-scroll, imagine what a little bit of mystery, chance, and "leveling up" can do for a 13-year-old student!
We don't need to beg our students to pay attention. We just need to change the rules of the game.
Ready to defeat classroom boredom?
I put together a completely FREE "Roll for Engagement" kit (with printable tokens, roll sheets, and rubrics) so you can turn any lesson into a quest this week.

Is your class so quiet you can hear a pin drop? 🦗
We’ve all been there—staring out at a sea of blank faces, mentally begging someone to raise their hand. But what if you didn't have to bribe, plead, or use cold-calling to get them to participate?
What if you just needed a pair of dice? 🎲
Gamification doesn't have to mean building a massive, complicated video game. Sometimes, adding a simple element of chance, a hidden mystery, or a basic "XP" system is all it takes to completely flip the energy in your room from passive to active.
Swipe through the photos below for 5 ridiculously simple ways to wake up a quiet classroom this week!

Let’s be honest for a second... we’ve all prepped a lesson we thought was absolute gold, only to be met with dead silence and blank stares. 😅
It’s easy to blame apathy, but 17 years in the classroom taught me something crucial: Your lesson isn't boring. It just has no win condition.
Think about how kids interact with games. They will fail a level 20 times in a row and keep trying. Why? Because the objective is crystal clear, the progress is visual, and the "win" feels earned. 🎮
When we hand out traditional assignments without game mechanics, students see a compliance task, not a quest.
Adding a clear win condition (like quest milestones, unlockable privileges, or team achievements) completely flips the energy in the room. Suddenly, they aren't just completing work—they're competing, collaborating, and leveling up their skills.

Let's be honest... how many times have you graded a stack of 30 projects that all look exactly the same? 🤦♂️
Hey everyone, Scott here! As a middle school teacher with 17 years in the classroom, I used to pull my hair out because my students would just Google the project prompt and copy whatever the first hit was. They weren't learning; they were just complying with my massive, restrictive rubrics.
During my TEDx talk, I shared a massive "Aha!" moment I had: Control leads to compliance. Autonomy leads to student engagement.
When I finally let go of the rigid rubrics and started using classroom gamification, everything shifted. I turned my middle school social studies and science units into epic project-based learning quests. I gave them the framework, but they got to choose how to defeat the "boss" (the assessment).
Implementing game mechanics in education isn't just about playing games; it is the ultimate behavior management and interactive learning tool. It completely cured my teacher burnout because I was finally seeing kids get creative again!
If you are exhausted from fighting apathy and want to try adding some gamified learning into your morning work or assessments, you don't have to start from scratch!

🛑 Have you ever noticed that adding a "leaderboard" to a classroom activity sometimes makes the quiet students completely disengage?
You aren't imagining it. A new 2024 meta-analysis on gamification in education showed that relying purely on points, badges, and competition often leads to shallow learning and higher student anxiety. In presentations, I refer to these at the PBLs (Points/Badges/Leaderboards).
If we want gamification to actually work, we have to move away from external rewards and focus on active decision-making. My favorite way to do this? The Narrative Quest. 🛡️
Check out the slides below where I break down the research, plus I included two exact prompts you can use for your Grade 8 Science (Water Systems) and Social Studies (Edo Japan) classes.
💬 I'd love to hear from other teachers or instructional designers: Have you ever used a "storyline" or a quest to teach a dry subject? How did the kids react?

There is absolutely no better feeling than hearing from a fellow teacher who finally got their love of teaching back. ❤️
We all know how exhausting the modern classroom can be. The constant battle for attention, the endless grading, the burnout. But it doesn't have to be that way.
I was going through my inbox this week and compiled these 5 messages from educators who took a leap of faith into classroom gamification. They shared how their most disengaged students are suddenly participating, how behavior issues have plummeted, and most importantly—how they are actually having fun teaching again.
Reading these is exactly why I do what I do. We are building an environment that kids actually want to be a part of.
If you have been feeling stuck in a rut with your lesson plans, take a minute to read their stories. It is entirely possible to flip the script in your classroom!
👇 Have you tried any game mechanics with your students yet? Tell me how it went in the comments!
