We’ve started a new research project: putting GPS collars on black bears in the research forest! 🐻
The goal of this project is to monitor black bears to better understand how large mammals are using our landscape under different thermal conditions. 🌡️
So far, we have deployed 7 collars, which measure fine-scale movement rates. 📍
This project is a partnership between JPRF and UNBC, with technical support from the BC Government.  🤝

Another student project highlight! UNBC Master’s student, Melissa Nelson, is studying understory vegetation and fire risks in the John Prince Research Forest.

Alternative silviculture regimes are critical to the future of forestry in BC. The Adaptive Silviculture for Climate Change instillation compares the effects of 4 different silviculture regimes. Melissa’s project is looking at the effects of the treatments to understory vegetation and variables associated with surface fire spread and potential 🔥🔥. The project includes plant survey quadrats 🌿(is diversity and abundance different?), microclimate weather stations🌡️(is the surface cooler because of the understory?) and leaf collection 🍃 (how does foliar moisture vary across the treatments?)

Another JPRF summer project highlight! 🪲 UNBC Master’s student Joshua Cherney is studying insects and beetles at JPRF! “Wood-boring insects and bark beetles feed on dead woody material and influence the rate of decomposition of deadwood. My project will investigate the relationship between beetle diversity and the decay rate of coarse woody debris, and what that relationship means for the larger context of the ASCC trials, specifically wildfire risk. To do this, we are collecting coarse woody debris volume measurements, deadwood moisture content, and trapping for insects within the JPRF.”

We just completed the second module of the Tl’azt’en Nation Interior Land Guardian Certification through UNBC continuing studies! 🌲 This module was field-based, taught by our staff at JPRF, and included some great guest speakers. Topics included traditional ecological knowledge, wildlife monitoring, forest management, fire fuel loading, stream assessments, and much more.

Project Highlight! 🫐🌱

UNBC Masters student Sequoia Elson is collecting data in the research forest. Here is a summary of her project:

Harvesting timber changes the forest structure, which impacts light availability, temperature and moisture, creating a range of microclimates across JPRF. Many plants, including berry producing species are affected by changes in microclimates. This research looks at gooseberries, rose hips and Hooker’s fairybells to see how the growth and production of the berries change under different forest structures. To do this, we are collecting samples of buds and flowers from the three species every week to track how they grow. At the end of the summer, we will be collecting berries from specific plants to see how forest structure and microclimates impact berry production! 🌱

Project Highlight! 🪶

UNBC Masters student Alexa Wiebe is in her second summer of data collection at JPRF. Here’s an introduction to her project:

Traditional clear-cut forest harvesting methods can reduce available habitat for forest-dependent species. This is the case for the Pacific wren, a common songbird in BC known for their long, complex songs. Pacific wrens typically forage and breed in mature, structurally complex forests, particularly in lower story vegetation and woody debris. Rather than traditional clear-cuts, partial retention harvesting methods preserve structural integrity in the lower canopy, and promote the use of cut blocks by Pacific wrens. Using autonomous recording units in clear-cut (CC), partial retention (PR), and control forest (CF) habitats, we found that wrens were detected equally in control forest and partial retention sites, and not in clear-cut sites. This year, we are conducting playback experiments on male wrens in control forests and partial retention sites to compare singing behaviours and territorially between the two habitats. If partial retention harvesting methods can provide habitat for Pacific wrens, then other forest-dependent species may benefit from them as well.
