More Than Sorting—Building the Mind Through Play

As the children carefully lined, grouped, compared, and repositioned the bears around the shapes, they were developing the foundations of mathematical thinking, spatial reasoning, pattern recognition, classification, and early problem-solving. Each small movement required focus, hand-eye coordination, and fine-motor control, while working together encouraged communication, negotiation, patience, and flexible thinking.
This kind of play is powerful because children are not simply learning colours and shapes—they are learning to notice relationships, organize ideas, test possibilities, and make meaning from what they see and do. These are the same thinking skills that later support math, literacy, independence, and confident learning.

Through threading, matching, rotating, and fitting pieces, children strengthen fine-motor coordination, visual-spatial awareness, concentration, problem-solving, and early mathematical thinking. These experiences support persistence, independence, and the ability to test ideas—important foundations for confident, capable learning.

Autumn Nature Explorers

With the ground covered in crunchy leaves and the trees glowing in shades of gold, the children stepped outdoors to experience autumn with their whole bodies. They wandered through the wooded area, bent down to examine leaves and tiny treasures, touched branches, climbed over uneven ground, rested on tree stumps, and moved freely between the open field and forest.

There was no need for a planned “activity”—nature became the invitation to play. Every leaf picked up, every step over a root, and every pause to look closely became part of their learning.

Through this autumn exploration, the children were strengthening balance, coordination and gross-motor skills as they navigated natural terrain. Picking up leaves, twigs and other small objects supported fine-motor development and hand-eye coordination. The different colours, textures, sounds and smells offered rich sensory experiences, while noticing seasonal changes encouraged curiosity, observation and early scientific thinking.

Being together outdoors also created opportunities for friendship, cooperation, independence, confidence and a sense of belonging. Most importantly, the children were learning to slow down, notice the beauty around them and build a meaningful relationship with the natural world.

Where the Shape Exploration Began

What began as spontaneous drawing quickly became meaningful mathematical learning. As the children noticed, named, compared, and traced shapes, their curiosity guided the experience. Following their lead, I extended the play through shape matching, tracing with loose parts, creating lines, and a playful “Bring Me” shape hunt—supporting early geometry, observation, problem-solving, language, and fine-motor development through child-led exploration.

For National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, Precious Gems introduced its meaning in a simple and age-appropriate way—through orange shirt art, handprints, and gentle conversations about kindness, respect, belonging, and caring for one another.
At this age, understanding begins with small seeds: knowing that every person deserves to feel safe, loved, heard, and valued.
Their little orange handprints and orange shirt art carried one powerful message:
Every Child Matters—every voice, every story, every little heart.
