Did you know that Canada’s population is made up of 22% immigrants? Out of that, more than 3 million are children.
Coming from an immigrant family, and being one myself, one of the first challenges I faced when coming to Canada was integrating into a new society. This is especially difficult when you do not have friends or family that can quickly get you caught up to the norms of a new country. Which is why I am so grateful that my parents put me in different sports programs growing up, where I was able to make new friends and learn social skills.
My beauty with a purpose project is called Sports Support. Currently, I am a full-time volunteer at a local soccer club called Waterloo Minors League, where I coach a team of six children. Paving the way for my project, which focuses on hosting a free week-long sports camp for immigrant and low-income children where I coach them in basketball and soccer, to give them the opportunity to learn teamwork, camaraderie and develop their language and social interaction skills through practice. It also gives me the opportunity to give one-on-one care to the children that need it the most, as others did for me.
