The Curious Sparrow

We practiced “mind over matter” with our first rainy play day together since last month. Some of the children for wet from puddle jumping and playing in long grass, so we encouraged everyone to shift from focusing on discomfort to taking nature in with all of our senses. I asked the children to notice what is different from the last few weeks. They noticed that blueberries are blue now, raspberries are ripe, canadian bunch berries no longer have 4 white petals and have bright red berries. Some of the yellow tansy has grown taller than most of us too!

We participated in an impromptu yoga challenge. The children accepted the extra difficult challenge of balancing poses on the bouncy log!

We finished our wet morning with a nature walk admiring flowers, mushrooms, and the supportive relationship that exists in nature—like how a dead tree can support the life of a new lingon berry!

As per the children’s request, we went to the blueberry patch.

We discussed bear safety on the way over, knowing there has been a lot of bear activity in Eagle Ridge. This morning when I took Hei Hei for a walk with Priya and Callie, we found bear poop— a reminder that we are in bear country and need to be bear aware and know how to respond if we have a bear or wildlife encounter.

We were enjoying the fresh juicy berries for about 45 minutes when another trail user informed us of a bear close by.

I was really proud of how quickly and calmly the children responded to direction and due to all the practice of what to do if we see a bear, they acted perfectly.

Each of the children found a friend to walk with, they stopped what they were doing immediately, and followed me out of the forest standing close by and alert. Nobody panicked and they all demonstrated confidence in how they responded!
