Measuring Pumpkins 🎃📏

Our mighty learners were invited to explore pumpkins, numbers, counting, and measuring through hands-on play. This simple invitation created so many wonderful opportunities for early mathematical thinking, cooperation, and learning together. 🧡

Henry and Kinsley worked together to use the measuring tape. They carefully measured the pumpkin and counted the inches out loud together “1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7!” When they finished, they proudly said, “We got 7!”. Their excitement showed their growing understanding of counting, number sequence, and measurement while also practising cooperation as they worked together. 7️⃣

Then it was Selena’s turn. She was so excited to try the measuring tape herself. After measuring the pumpkin in front of her, she proudly called out, “Look, Michelle! I got 5!” Her excitement showed how engaged she was in discovering and making sense of numbers through play. 🥰

While watching her friends, Kaia carefully observed what they were doing. She pointed to the numbers in front of her, showing her curiosity and interest in the activity. When she pointed to number 4, I said, “Four,” encouraging her to listen, imitate, and connect the spoken word with the number she was pointing to. These little moments provide meaningful opportunities for Kaia to build her early language, communication, number recognition, and confidence at her own pace. 🔢✨

While waiting for her turn, Izzy joined Henry in counting the pumpkins on the tray. When they finished, I asked, “How many pumpkins did you count?” Izzy proudly picked up the number 5 and said, “Five!” 5️⃣

Through this experience, our learners were developing number recognition, counting, one-to-one correspondence, measurement concepts, comparing quantities, and early mathematical vocabulary such as more, less, bigger, smaller, and how many. They were also practising fine-motor skills, turn-taking, cooperation, communication, problem-solving, and confidence as they shared their discoveries with one another.

It’s amazing how much learning can happen when we simply give children the time, materials, and space to explore through play! 🍁🎃💛

Our mighty learners enjoyed a fun invitation to play at our little pumpkin patch! 🛒🍎🎃

Selena took on the role of the cashier while Izzy, Kinsley, and Henry explored the pumpkin patch, choosing pumpkins, pretending to shop, and enjoying the different fall-themed materials. As they played, we noticed so many wonderful moments of curiosity, imagination, and learning emerging naturally from their play. 🍁✨

Kinsley noticed the scarecrow and excitedly said, Oh look, there is a scarecrow!” He showed curiosity as he explored the different fall items around the pumpkin patch, sharing his discovery with his friends and engaging with his environment.

While Henry was paying, he proudly said, “I got $5!” He was exploring money and numbers through his pretend shopping experience.

Izzy enjoyed sitting in the café area, pretending to drink her pumpkin spice drink. Suddenly, she began counting the pumpkins on the shelves, naturally bringing early math and counting into her play. 🎃

Selena continued participating as the cashier, interacting with her friends and exploring the role of serving customers.

Through these moments, our learners demonstrated different Flight dispositions to learn:
🌟 Selena – Participating: She confidently took on the role of cashier, interacted with her friends, and contributed to the shared play.
🌟 Henry – Seeking: His interest in the $5 bill showed his curiosity about money and his desire to explore how it could be used during his pretend shopping.
🌟 Izzy – Seeking & Playfulness: While enjoying her pretend pumpkin spice drink, she noticed the pumpkins around her and began counting them, showing curiosity and bringing her own ideas into the play.
🌟 Kinsley – Participating & Playfulness: He joined the shared experience, explored the materials, and used his imagination while playing alongside his friends.

This invitation to play supported communication, social interaction, early numeracy, imagination, problem-solving, and confidence while giving each child space to follow their own interests and ideas. ❤️

When children are given an invitation to play, they show us so many different ways they are learning, exploring, and making meaning. ✨

A small dayhome, a big dream, and so many reasons to be grateful. ❤️

I am incredibly humbled and honoured to be one of the 32 nominees for Childcare Services, and to receive the Bronze Award.🥉✨

Last year, I was blessed to receive Platinum Award, and honestly, I never expected to be recognized again this year. Just being nominated once more already felt like such a blessing. To receive these awards is something I truly don’t take for granted. 🥹❤️

Behind this little dayhome are many long days, lots of learning, hard work, countless little moments, and so much love. Every child who walks through my door becomes part of our little dayhome family, and I’m so thankful for the trust parents place in me to care for their precious little ones. 🥰

To all the amazing parents, friends, and especially my family, thank you for always supporting, encouraging, and believing in me. I truly couldn’t do this without you. ❤️

A Little Tea Party, A Lot of Learning

Yesterday, our mighty learners turned the dramatic play area into a little tea party! 🫖🥐

At first, Selena, Izzy, and Kaia gathered around the table. Selena took on the role of the server, carefully pouring tea and offering food to Izzy and Kaia. They shared the pretend food, served one another, and enjoyed being together. Through their imaginative play, they were exploring familiar experiences from everyday life while creating their own little story together.

As their play continued, Kinsley and Henry joined the group, bringing new ideas and energy into the experience. Soon, the play became a shared social experience where everyone had opportunities to participate, communicate, imitate, negotiate roles, and build on one another’s ideas. 🤍

Through the lens of Alberta’s Flight Framework, the children were playing, participating, sharing, imagining, and connecting. They were learning through relationships and hands-on experiences—developing communication, social awareness, cooperation, confidence, and a growing sense of belonging within their group.

What started as a simple pretend tea party naturally grew into shared, child-led learning, showing us how much learning can happen when children have the time, space, and materials to follow their own ideas. ✨

🍂 Let’s Decorate a Fall Tree! 🍁

Today, our mighty learners worked together to decorate our Fall Tree! 🌳🍂 They explored the beautiful colours of autumn and differentiated between red, orange, and yellow, choosing where each colour belonged on the tree.

As they placed the leaves, the children practiced colour recognition, sorting, matching, and classification while strengthening their fine-motor skills, hand-eye coordination, and concentration. They also explored patterns, made choices, and expressed their creativity as they transformed the tree into a colourful fall scene. 🍁✨

Through this hands-on experience, our mighty learners are learning that leaves change colours during the fall and that different colours can be grouped and organized in many ways. Most importantly, they had fun learning through play, creativity, and exploration! ❤️🍂

Feed the Very Hungry Caterpillars! 🐛🌿✂️

Our little learners had a fun, hands-on invitation to feed the very hungry caterpillars while practicing their scissor skills! 🐛🌈

It was wonderful to see each child at their own stage of learning. Kaia carefully observed her friends and practiced figuring out how to open and close the scissors. Henry did a great job using the scissors independently, while Selena and Izzy were deeply focused and determined as they carefully snipped away. Ethan was busy mastering his cutting skills, showing great focus, control, and confidence as he practiced each snip. ✂️💚

As they cut the grass and leaves, they were not only having fun, but they were building important skills along the way. Scissor practice helps strengthen fine-motor muscles, hand-eye coordination, bilateral coordination, hand strength, concentration, and control. It also supports independence and confidence as children learn to use tools safely and purposefully.

I love watching each child learn at their own pace, practice new skills, make mistakes, try again, and celebrate their little successes. Every snip is a step toward stronger hands, greater coordination, and growing confidence!

A Full Day of Fun at Parson’s Creek! 💦🛝🛴🌞

Yesterday, our mighty learners had an absolute blast at Parson’s Creek Skatepark! 💚 We spent the day there from 10:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m., making the most of the beautiful weather, outdoor play, and lots of opportunities to explore, move, and have fun together!

As soon as we arrived, the children were ready to play! They headed straight to the playground where they enjoyed riding the see-saw, climbing the monkey bars, swinging high on the swings, and going down the slide. 🛝 They also had so much fun riding their scooters, with Ethan and Kinsley showing off their scooter skills! 🛴
There was lots of imagination and laughter too! The children played “T-Rex, will catch you!” 🦖, running, chasing, and trying their best not to get caught. Henry happily took on the role of the mighty T-Rex, which made the game even more exciting! 😂💚

After all that active play, we sat down together and enjoyed our lunch. We took some time to rest and recharge before getting ready for the next adventure. During our rest time, I helped the children change into their swimsuits, and then it was time to head over to the spray park! 💦

At first, everyone was a little hesitant because the water was COLD! 🥶 Some of the children slowly tested the water and carefully hopped around. But it didn’t take long before they forgot all about the cold and were running, jumping, laughing, and splashing with excitement! Watching their confidence grow as they became more comfortable in the water was so much fun to see.

After a busy afternoon of water play, Izzy, Henry, and Selena were ready for a well-deserved nap. The rest of our mighty learners continued enjoying the day before we wrapped up our outdoor adventure.

Today was filled with gross-motor movement, imaginative play, social interactions, problem-solving, independence, confidence-building, and plenty of laughter! Most importantly, the children had the opportunity to be active, explore their environment, challenge themselves, and create wonderful memories together.

Splashing Into Summer Fun! 💦☀️

Today, we enjoyed an exciting playdate with another dayhome, and it was the perfect day to cool off in the sun! We set up a giant slip-and-slide, and the moment the children saw it, they couldn’t wait to jump in. We reminded them to put on their swimsuits first, and once everyone was ready, the fun began!
The children spent the day sliding, splashing, laughing, and cheering each other on. Some raced down the slide, while others carefully walked through the water before building up the courage to take their turn. It was heartwarming to see them encouraging one another, practicing patience while waiting for their turn, and creating wonderful friendships along the way.
Moments like these are more than just fun, they help children build confidence, strengthen their gross motor skills, develop social connections, and create joyful summer memories that they’ll cherish. Seeing their smiles and hearing their laughter made the day even more special. 💙🌈

Little hands, tiny seeds, and big imaginations 🌱✨

Before we began planting, we gathered together to read the book Plant the Tiny Seed, which sparked meaningful conversations about nature, growth, and how something so tiny can turn into something beautiful. 📚🌼 The story created so much curiosity and excitement for what was waiting at the table.

When Izzy, Selena, Ethan, Kaia, and Kinsley saw the planting invitation set up, their eyes instantly lit up. The excitement in their voices, the smiles, and the eagerness to begin made the moment feel so special. 💚

Each child had their own pot to plant and care for using haricot bean seeds and peas. Right away, Ethan carefully looked at the tiny seeds and proudly distinguished which ones were peas and which were haricot beans. Kinsley happily shared that they had done planting at school before, making connections between experiences at school and within our learning environment. 🌱

Kaia took her time observing the materials closely while carefully holding her pot, showing thoughtfulness and curiosity throughout the activity. Meanwhile, Izzy and Selena were especially excited to scoop and explore the soil, eagerly filling their pots and engaging their senses through play and discovery. 🪴✨

As the children carefully placed the tiny seeds into their own pots, they began counting them one by one, naturally incorporating early math skills into the experience. They discussed how many seeds they had, compared sizes, and talked about what their plants might look like once they start growing. 🌼

One of the sweetest moments was watering the plants together. Since we only had one watering can, the children patiently waited for their turn, showing kindness, cooperation, and self-regulation. They encouraged one another and watched carefully as each friend helped water the seeds. 💧🤎

This learning experience beautifully connected with Alberta’s Flight Framework by creating a space filled with curiosity, relationships, collaboration, and meaningful play. Through this simple planting invitation, the children explored literacy, numeracy, communication, responsibility, and their connection to the natural world, all while learning alongside one another. 🌿

St. Patrick’s Day Sensory Exploration on the Light Table 🍀🌈💡✨
Today our Mighty Learners explored our St. Patrick’s Day sensory bin using the light table. The glowing colors made the rice sparkle and invited the children to dive into play and discovery.

At first, they grabbed their scoopers and little cauldrons, happily scooping and pouring the colorful rice from one container to another. This simple activity helped them practice their fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, and early measuring concepts while having fun.

Soon, I noticed Kinsley using his finger to trace through the rice. He carefully moved the grains aside and made the letter “O.” With a big smile he said, “Look Ethan, I make letter O!” Inspired by his friend, Ethan joined in and traced the letter “A” in the rice. It was wonderful to see them exploring early literacy and letter recognition through play.

Meanwhile, Izzy stayed busy scooping and pouring rice over and over, enjoying the textures and movement while strengthening her grip and coordination. Henry was on a mission collecting all the little clover leaves, carefully placing them into the cauldron as he sorted and gathered his treasures.

The children also worked together to stack the wooden rainbow, helping one another find the right pieces and balance them. This activity encouraged teamwork, problem-solving, spatial awareness, and cooperative play as they built their colorful rainbow.

Through this sensory experience, the children explored textures, creativity, cooperation, early writing, and imaginative play. Activities like this also support language development, social skills, and critical thinking as the children share ideas and learn from each other.

Our Mighty Learners had so much fun exploring, creating, and learning together today! 🌈🍀💡
