Today is Orange Shirt Day!

Seven Generations Education Institute (SGEI) staff and students at the Rainy Lake Campus came together to take part in the local Every Child Matters walk, followed by the Orange Shirt Day powwow. SGEI teamed up with many other great organizations to put on an event on Agency One lands. It was a powerful day of reflection, solidarity, and commitment to fostering understanding and healing within our community.

Hey Kenora! As a continuation of our first annual Welcome Week, SGEI is hosting students, their friends, families, AND the public for Family Week! We've got a handful of fun events, including a Family Fitness night, an Autumn Adventure Day, creative crafts and a journalling workshop, plus a Super Smash Bros tournament, hosted by Art Hub!

Do you enjoy getting crafty? Join us every Wednesday for our October Sewing and Craft Club! You don’t have to be an experienced sewer or crafter to participate. All skill levels are welcome. Learn how to sew, work on an independent project, or follow along with this month’s sewing challenge. All materials, including sewing machines, are provided by SGEI.

No registration is required, just drop in!

Starting this Friday, September 25, our Kenora Campus (Manidoo Baawaatig) Hairstyling students will be accepting appointments for the SGEI Salon! Book yourself a haircut, colour, highlights, or style and provide our students with some valuable hands-on experience working with clients! They’re accepting appointments for Fridays during the semester, plus other dates as available.

Call and leave a message at (807) 468-3096 extension 3223 to request an appointment. Please be patient in booking your appointment, as our students are learning to accept client calls and schedule appointments. Miigwech!

Historic announcement for our organization! – SGEI is pleased to announce $50 million in funding from the Mastercard Foundation to support us in providing Indigenous-led education for our learners and communities across Treaty 3.

This means that the communities and learners we serve will soon have access to MORE—more programs, increased support, enhanced technology, and benefit from increased opportunities to connect with language and culture.

As part of the Emergency Management Curriculum, our Thunder Bay and Geraldton high school learners finished the course with a tabletop emergency exercise, where students were given a First Nation community map, available resources, including ATVs, vehicles and walkie-talkies, and an emergency scenario with assigned roles. Working as a team, they had to assess the community’s geography, resources and infrastructure and put an emergency response plan into action.

The exercise challenged students to think critically under pressure, understand their roles and responsibilities, communicate as a team, and make decisions with the resources available to them.

By connecting emergency management concepts with realistic, community-specific scenarios, experiences like EM201 course help build knowledge, confidence and capacity that students can carry back to their communities and into future careers.

Finally, on October 29, drop in to use the machines and tools available to put the finishing touches on your Halloween costume!

Last week, SGEI held its first annual Welcome Week at the Rainy Lake and Kenora campuses! Students, their families, and the public got to enjoy our wellness day, family fun day, movie night, and open doors events!

With food trucks, games, live music, local business resource booths, and more, we were so grateful to our community partners for providing so many opportunities for fun, wellness, and connection.
