📱 **Is your child getting their first phone—or learning to use one more independently?**

Smartphone Ready is a practical, interactive course for ages 9–12. Kids will work through realistic situations, play games, discuss their choices and build a personal Smartphone Plan to bring home.

We’ll cover healthy phone habits, screen-time balance, internet safety, social media and group chats, sharing photos with consent, and AI. Most of all, kids will practise how to pause, make a thoughtful choice and ask for help when something feels wrong.

Well today's Art Bot Engineers was a huge success! It combined circuitry, engineer design, creativity, and art all in one very fun and engaging hands-on workshop! The kids wired their own motors, used the design process met failure with laughter and a determination to make a better bot. And boy, did they ever create some fun and fantastic robots (and cool scribble art!) today. Well done everyone 👏 👏 👏.

I still have space available in this week's Fun Friday drop-In programming. Here is a description of what we will be doing below:

Students will design and build their own vibrating “Art Bot” using a mini motor, a cut pool noodle (or cup), rubber bands, markers, and craft supplies. When powered on, the bot vibrates across paper, making abstract designs. Learners explore engineering, circuits, motion, and art, then reflect on how slight adjustments can change the outcome. This STEAM lesson encourages critical thinking, creativity, problem solving, and design iteration.

This will be a really fun and hands-on workshop with a focus on the engineering process, as well as an art component!

As summer begins to shift into fall, we are also moving from carefree summer fun back into routines, learning, and getting to work!

The beginning of the year is such an important time for reconnecting—both between students and their learning coach, and among the students themselves. One of the best ways to reconnect is simply through play.

Our visit to the inflatable water park was a perfect example. It was so wonderful to see the teenagers joining the younger kids for games of tag through the obstacles. Everyone was laughing, playing, and reconnecting naturally after the summer break.

Our Fun Fridays also started off with a BANG with our three-room Escape Room Challenge! It was a huge success and a full day of riddles, teamwork, problem-solving, and fun. The kids were completely engaged in the process all day—learning without even realizing it because they were having so much fun.

It has been a great start to another year at RMLC, and I’m excited for everything ahead!

SMART PHONE READY: A (potentially) New Course to be offered at RMLC this Fall

I'm working on a new program at Rocky Mountain Learning Collective and would love some parent input!

Getting a first phone is a big step toward independence. While smartphones can be incredible tools for communication, safety, learning, organization and creativity, they also come with a lot for kids — and parents — to navigate.

I'm currently developing Smartphone Ready, a practical, interactive smartphone-readiness course taught directly to kids before and during their first years of phone ownership.

The goal is to set kids up for success from the beginning, rather than waiting until problems arise.

The course will explore things like healthy phone habits, screen-time awareness, online safety, privacy, social media, family and school expectations, AI, digital communication and what kids should actually do when something goes wrong online.

Kids would also work through real-life scenarios and leave with practical tools they can use at home with their families.

Before I build too much of the program, I'd really like to hear from parents — including parents of older teens who can look back and tell me what they wish they had known or discussed before their child received a phone.

I've created a short 3–5 minute survey. There is also an option at the end to receive information when I open registration for the first pilot course.

🌱 Looking Ahead to September 2027 — A Primary Pod at RMLC?

Over the past couple of years, I’ve been asked more and more whether Rocky Mountain Learning Collective will ever offer programming for younger, Primary-aged learners.

The answer has always been maybe someday... and I think it might be time to start exploring what that “someday” could look like!

I am beginning to look ahead to September 2027 and the possibility of adding a small Primary Learning Pod for children in Grades 1–3.

This is NOT a registration announcement just yet. Before I can move forward, I need to know if there are enough families in our community who would genuinely be interested. A Primary Pod would require another dedicated Learning Coach, so there needs to be enough interest to make that possible.

So, what could Primary learning at RMLC look like?

I strongly believe that self-directed learning doesn't mean children are expected to already know how to learn independently. Independence is something we teach.

For our youngest learners, that means starting small—learning to make choices, ask questions, solve problems, work through frustration, ask for help, and gradually take ownership of their learning.

Strong foundations in reading, writing and numeracy would be important, but so would building, creating, experimenting, playing, moving, spending time outdoors and being curious.

A Primary Pod would continue the same values that guide RMLC: small groups, individualized learning, strong relationships, hands-on experiences, creativity, critical thinking, movement, outdoor learning and learning at a pace that makes sense for each child.

Right now, I am simply trying to answer one question:

Is there a need for this in our community?
